Amish buggy horses?

Yesterday we were in northeast Indiana where there are a fair number of Amish. I happened to see a horse in a pen next to the road and thought it looked a lot like a race horse. So I just googled it and found that many perhaps most use standardbreds for pulling the buggy (and either Belgians or Clydesdales for work).

As I understand it a Standard bred is a race horse..?

They're harness racers, cart pullers.

Angry Warning triangles

I always loved the euro warning triangles on the back of their buggies.

In fact early on I made sure to obtain and install euro-spec
triangles on both my 560SEC and the Red Plum - both American-spec cars. I installed the original euro-spec headlights, tail lights and front blinkers on the 560SEC too, just like God & Mercedes-Benz intended.

They really do work. I never "got it" how come the US DOT made those illegal in this country. What is wrong with those meddling stupid government politicians bureaucrats and lawyers.

I am surprised that they haven't declared those warning triangles on the Amish buggies illegal too.

That makes sense! I believe before the Arabic breeds came into thourobred racing they dominated that sort of racing too.

Is it possible that you are confusing the removable, trunk-lid-mounted Euro warning triangles with the orange "slow moving vehicle" triangles commonly seen on - and generally required by law to be displayed on - slow moving vehicles in the U.S.?

I never quite understood why those were removed. They definitely provide warning to upcoming drivers if you are disabled -- in fact many truckers carry these, and truck supply stores carry them. On another note, buggies are also required to have bright LED flashers which help tremendously at night.

Actually, the Standardbred horse comes later than the Thoroughbred, and is American. TBs were derived several hundred years ago from arab and other middle eastern stallions bred onto native anglo-irish mares. Standardbred horses come a little later than that. Google the Thoroughbred stallion "Messenger".
There was a time in the U.S. when Standardbreds were more common than Thoroughbreds and were used in flat racing and steeplechase style races, but their time was short lived in that regard. They are much better trotters.
