Anyone own an 80" TV??

My 55" Panasonic has been giving my signals she may be on her way out.

Thinking about picking one up if it's about to kick the bucket. I tried looking at 90 inchers at Best Buy, but they say they only carry 80". I couldn't believe those damn TVs when I was in the store. Just was in awe.

Wait till after X-mess. Buy a 60" TeeVee on Craigslist from someone who got a new 80" one as a gift. Should be 1/3-1/4 of the store price, and you're not directly supporting Chinese manufacturing.

I hear the typical run of these TVs typically are anywhere between 7-10 years. 10 years being slightly optimistic. Mines around 5 years so if it does kick the bucket, I will be slightly pissed.

If you buy an LED unit it may last longer than that. The main parts that fail are the fluorescent tubes that illuminate the screen and the inverter transformers. LED backlighting gets rid of both problems -- assuming good-quality LEDs are used that don't flicker, the TVs could last decades.

I don't have one but I have seen them at Costco. They are a bit much for me IMHO.

id need a really big room for that, otherwise i couldnt get far enough away to keep from going cross eyed.

The future of consumer displays is going to interesting. Curved screens don't appear to offer any real benefit. 4K screens are coming down in price, but broadcast and streaming content has to wait for better delivery systems.

A projector might be my next TV. Use a whole wall for a screen.

Are they bright enough to use if the room isn't darkened?

I haven't checked in a while but they were getting brighter all along. I have seen a couple that looked good on a surface much larger than I would use. Movie theaters use digital projectors now so the technology is there but don't know about the cost.

We have a big screen, a 65 inch, and a projection screen which is about eight feet across. We only use the projection screen for movies.

The worst thing about the projector is that some of them make a bit of a noise due to the cooling fan, but you can dial that out. The bulbs are also expensive to replace since we are not talking about a 60 watt bulb.

With the projector the room needs to be really dark, but then when we are watching a film it is always is.

By the way... The 65 inch I have is a rear projection screen that is about 20 years old and works great. It is a 480i, but I'm old so I don't care.

Movie theatres are also generally a lot darker than your living room is, especially when you're watching TeeVee and your friend/wife/kid is doing something that needs light.

Screen choice is key when dealing with projectors. Really makes all the difference in brightness.
