Perhaps Lewis Hamiltons comments this week, that F1 cars are becoming too easy to drive, compared to the older cars, allows younger drivers to compete.

Lewis Hamilton hits out at Formula 1 for taking it too easy on drivers - Mirror Online
“Personally, I'm not a huge admirer of the direction that everything's going in, in the sense that the cars get slower every year so physically it's easier for me in the car,” said Hamilton. “Maybe in the hot conditions it's still a challenge, but generally it will take me two race distances to feel the same as I did in my first season. |

I see. David Hobbs has been on all season about how much harder the 2014 cars are to drive, but they're talking about two different things. Hobbs has been bringing up how the reduced downforce and increased torque are making it much harder to manage traction, and the brake by wire on the rear has meant that no one except Mercedes seems to be able to get their brake bias right, along with the plethora of settings on the steering wheel the driver has to manage. OTOH, Hamilton has a point about the car not trying so hard to rip your head off in the corners.

David's last seasons were in the 80's, so I'm sure he's dazzled by how much the driver has to do in the car, but current drivers are much more accustomed to all the info and input, let alone being able to chat with "engineering" during a race.
