Our puppy is eating poop
So is there some good reason the puppy keeps eating poop she finds outside? Is there harm to it other than making her have bad breath?
The Mrs. is distraught. personally I just try to keep her away from poop but don't get too caught up in it. It seems to me there may be some benefit to her from it otherwise why would she want to?

My puppy is doing the same. Supposedly she will grow out of it at about 1 year.
The science behind it I believe is that they don't really digest their food well so it's just food to them. I have to follow closely behind her to prevent her from having a snack. Yuk

Dietary deficiency? I have heard of this behavior many times but have not experienced it with any of our dogs over the years. Or know the answer of why it occurs. Any vet service should give you a solid answer just for the asking.
Since on a canine unlike us I believe the distance from the stomach to the exit is a much straighter line the others dogs waste may indeed contain some food value still. The concept does not sound that good in general. Watching to see if he or she consumed her own feces may be an indication if it is dietary in nature. Adding table scraps to the dogs diet may help. Although you may already be doing so. Long ago our dogs almost existed on those alone. |

The Navajo word for dog is łééchąą'í. Pronounced sort of like "tsi' chon' eh".
It roughly translates to "the one that shlts and eats it"

Why Dogs Eat Poop - The 5 Primary Causes
Here's a few reasons why. I've known dogs with that behavior and most all of them grew out of it in time. I don't think it really hurts them, unless the poop has been infested with flies or some such which could lead to parasites.

Don't tell your enemies when the dog licks their face.
I would try to discourage the behavior. |

That was a good article cmbdiesel reffered to and covers most the bases I imagine. Tom what you may have here is a failure to communicate with your dog situation on your hands. Last edited by barry12345; 11-24-2013 at 05:49 PM. |

I have two adult greyhounds and they both do it too. They don't get the best kibble at the store but we supplement them with a lot of treats and scraps, so I don't think its dietary. It seems they will eat anything they can find edible. One of them is constantly getting into the potatoes and eating them raw. Cantaloupes aren't safe on the counter. He also got into mama's baking chocolate recently and almost killed himself.

Well, I am having a good laugh now.
She does not seem to be interested in her own poop. The potential for parasites seems like a good reason to avoid it if possible. I liked Jim's comment best....along with Frank X Morris.!

Had this issue with mine when he was a pup. Switched to adult food and he stopped in a few days. Vet said many reasons with dietary issues being one. I fed him Nutro products at the time.
