Good news for gun owners

I wondered if I should put this in the political threads, but it is really a business story. it is talking about how the sales of some rifles have fallen by 70% over the last year.

Sometime back I was reading where if you wanted a gun such as this then then just wait because the bubble would burst and they would be selling used for cheap. Hopefully, for those of us that would be buyers anyway, that day is near.

It is just like the run up in prices of collectable cars. Every ten years or so cars become the next big thing and those of us that like to drive them can't even find any for sale. Then the bubble burst and a few come on the market. Is the same thing about to happen with guns?

I know a fellow who bought three ARs during the unpleasantness for 1800-2400 apiece. He was sure he'd never have another chance to buy one ever. He can't get half what he paid for them now. Dumbass.

I've been thinking about getting an AR for a while now. It might be time.

I built an awesome AR and its one of the best rifles I own, with optics I have 2,800 into it.

I have a lower I want to build out as a tack driving DMR rifle and will run about $4k with optics.

In 5.56 they are really pretty good, in 7.62 the Scar17 is better.

Great rifles, and the market is shot BTW.

Guy recently wanted to trade me an AR in .308 in part for a motorcycle. It was beautiful but cash was what I was after so I passed on the gun.

If you want an AR, build it, good experience, good times, only live once.

Isn't that good news for gun BUYERS, not gun OWNERS? I'd imagine that owners would prefer to sell at a tidy profit!

You are quite right. I was thinking of gun buyers when I posted this but gun owners as well.

I know two people who bought every modern rifle they could get their hands on about four or five years ago. They have at least one gun safe each filled up with them. They were betting on the weapons being banned and then making a fortune when they sold them. I am sure they are not the only ones with a safe full of investments that look like they won't pan out.

If they were true gun owners and not speculators they would be happy right now. But they bet wrong, at least for the next few months.

Anything can happen, but if the Republicans take the Senate then any big gun reforms are moot and the value of these guns will plunge.

I think I will wait until next March to see where the prices are then before buying anything. No need to buy until the market really bottoms out.

And speaking of buying....

Any comments on FN guns? I know they are supposed to be good and they sure charge for them like they are, but are they really worth the money?

The only FN made weapons I've shot were U.S. government issue M240 and M249. The 249 was just a familiarization firing. I've been through machine gun school with the 240. I've had it apart and back together many many times. It strikes me as being very well made, considerably more rugged than the M60 it replaced. Accurate and reliable, but heavy as truck.

It has been a long time since i used a weapon such as this but I do remember most of the FN products just as you said. The weight might be an issue with me since I am old and frail. Really. Both are objective terms, but I would think by anyone's standards I would be considered old. The Frail part is a matter of degrees, or more to the point it is to the degree that it matters to me.

Perhaps I should consider something lighter? But then I will be only target shooting, not lugging the thing through the scrub oaks looking for a bear.

Doesn't apply directly to me as I don't own any modern rifles. All mine are WWII vintage or earlier (military ones that is, not 22's). But I am considering selling the bulk of my collection as it's becoming a hassle to deal with. 35 guns is a tad impractical on several levels. I don't expect to make a massive profit on them but I was pretty disgusted with the offers I had for two of them that I took round to several gun shops a few weeks back. Mauser K98 and Lee Enfield. I'd owned the Mauser for a decade and the Enfield just slightly less and I was offered 160 bucks for each at one place, 150 and 250 at another and 150 and 160 at a third. That was less than I'd paid for the Mauser. Seems the gun market is saturated at present, assuming these dealers are to be believed. Of course could also be that they are just trying to screw me over so I figured to hell with it. I'll try a different approach if I really do decide to dump them.

- Peter.

It seems like the only Enfield .303's that are holding their value are the carbines with the flash hider, but of course that is subject to change.

I have always like the .303 for target shooting. Simple to work on and easy for me to hold.

But that $160 price seems about right for the current conditions.
