I ride my motorcycle in the HOV lane often. Its the far left lane on a multi lane stretch. It tends to be free flowing while the non HOV lanes tend to back up 1/2 mile or more. What gets me is when I see other motorcycle riders hugging the far outside of the HOV lane. I can't help but thinking "Are you trying to hide from the mirrors of everyone who wants to pull out in front of you?"

People who zoom up in front of me on the highway, in a big hurry to occupy the safe driving distance I'm trying to maintain, then they JAM ON THEIR BRAKES! Usually because now they're too close to the vehicle in front that's slowing down.

Or type-A maniacs, usually in full sized 4WD, extended cab pickups, who think they're driving a sports-car, and need to assert their manhood by cutting me off after I've signaled a lane-change or that I'm ready to exit.

Same types in big 4WD trucks/SUVs that ride my rear-bumper, flash their lights, and zoom around me because I refuse to drive 30 - 40 - 50 mph on snowy, icy streets. Often, they then find out that 4WD doesn't make their brakes work any better, after they have to stop by hitting the car in front of them!

Happy Motoring, Mark

I leave a half to one car space in front of me a lot of times if it is reasonable. Two reasons: one is because the off ramp is blind so figure if I am hit I have more margin to stop (and instead of turning per the turn, straiten so more chance pushed in the median than into the vehicle in front) and this is the main reason, so when the light turns green I can get a head start so I don't get honked at for being slow. In my ticket class (passing a truck) it said pull up to where you can still see the vehicle in front's tires.
For short ramps, you have to use your judgement which is something people typically don't use on their own anyway...

As far as stopping position, It's fine to stop well back from the car in front of you if you are the last in the line. As more cars fill in, move on up.

Most people drive very selfishly and are out there strictly for themselves and not to promote the safety and flow of the traffic around them by maintaining proper situational awareness.

I think the idea of staying to the far left is to be able to take it to the shoulder when the people not looking in their mirrors (or looking but still failing to see motorcycles) pull out in front of them.

On ramp traffic that comes up beside me and matches my speed. The won't speed up and take the gap in front of me or slow down and get behind. Instead they pace me until their lane starts to disappear.

75% of the time, they're on a cell phone.

I think that mentality can get you killed. When you're already all the way over there's not much room left when you need it most. Granted it is a bit unnerving riding right next to stopped or very slow traffic but I know I'm in people's mirrors for 50-100 yards+. I see guys riding in positions where they wouldn't even show up in somebody's mirrors 2 or 3 car lengths ahead even if drivers were looking attentively for them.

Most places will have enough of a shoulder between the far left white line and the wall or grass to squeeze a bike in. A cager who takes your lane probably isn't going to go into that area. I wouldn't go assuming that drivers around you look in mirrors. Many don't.

I'm sure a scenario like this happens "relatively" speaking.

Me: Sees driver on my right side accelerating to car in front, but I'm on his left side and driving faster (not accelerating, but just happened to be driving faster), closing in the gap.

Other driver: Angry because I did not let him through. Goes online when he gets home (or while he's driving) and puts my example of driving up into this kind of list

I hate drivers who don't know where they are going and use their car's power to cut in front of you, from the right side, then cuts you off again from the left so they won't miss their exit. I see more frequent cases of drivers like this who pass on the right and cut off 5 lanes of highway traffic, to the left, then cut to the right just to get a few feet ahead (or make an emergency exit).

Hey, I like everybody's driving.
Sometimes other people's motoring style is very creative and non-conforming.
Keeps things interesting.........

The solution would be to wait at the stop bar. . .

Pulling up to the center of an intersection then having traffic pass on the berm is dangerous for oncoming traffic that wants to make a left hand turn.

Regardless, none of this changes the physics of long trailer, tight corner, car stopped into the intersection blocking traffic. ..

You left off, with their high beams on to the tailgate comment. On my commute home from night shift on state HWY's at least 20% of the time I am tailgated by an azz with their high beams on no matter my speed.

Interesting and creative driver I did spy on my waywards onto yeh job one bright morn ,it caught my off guard because I was unsure of what I just witnessed ,sure enough as I pulled beside the young lady she was driving with her forearms while eating a bowl of cereal ,I was so wanting to honk my horn as she went in for the next bite ,and you guessed it ,the Miley Cyrius wrecking ball song was on and strong.
