James May's 'Cars of the People'....
This is worth watching. May is creative, the historical research is good and the comic timing is great.
This is on BBC America so if you don't get this then perhaps it will show up later on NetFlix or the BBC internet site. And then there is always YouTube. |

I don't know why he is so popular. The conclusion of the series was crap.

I only got through the first 20 minutes so far... but how does the Model T not count? Because it was built by a private individual, not by a government (a fascist genocidal one at that)?

Also for the people watching it on BBC America, you're really missing out. The show is edited down to 45 minutes, they change the music etc. You should really be watching the BBC UK version. Same goes for TopGear.

Some people that I work with think that because I am in the media business I know everything about it. Nope. I can turn on my TV; I can even figure out most of the buttons on my remote. But beyond that.......
If anyone wants to post a detailed description of how to get the whole thing I would be grateful. Just a link to a site would be nice. Perhaps the site Tyler liked to is the way to get it all? And as far as episode three goes I have yet to see it. The history in E one was well done and the cars in E two were interesting, but I will have to wait until next week to see how he ties the Royce into the mix. The overall theme of the show is that Dictators really bought transportation to the masses, but I think what May is actually showing is that Dictators bought nothing but junk while the free market delivered the 2CV and the Ford T. Hitler bought about the VW, but Hitler was really looking to bring about a war production facility and not a car for the masses so he was actually pulling a massive con job on his own people. But then, isn't that what Dictators do? (Please note I am not trying to be political here but historical. There have been some elected people who tried to bring cars to the people and failed just as big as the Dictators did.) |

A real Dictator car. A friend of mine owned one of these back in the 60's, but his was the four-door.

Hitler needed money to build the car so Germans could buy one through a savings plan. You paid for the car up front and then you were put on a list to receive one. The only 'bugs' every built were prototypes; by the time the factory was built it was converted to military production for VW based Kublewagens. Hitler did put the word out that he wanted a people's car, so Baron Von Opel decided to get into the game and even showed one at the Berlin Auto Show. Hitler personally told Von Open to stuff it and the Opel peoples car never got past one display model. And check this out...... [QUOTE=Idle;3381763He set up F. Porsche to design a car for the people but it had to be one that would operated in any climate. Think North Africa and Russia during the winter. This meant air cooled and that also eliminated spare parts for the cooling system.[/QUOTE]
I'm aware of Ganz's developments. Also the work the Czech's were doing on rear drive Tatra's which Porsche was familiar with having worked with them as well. There's no need go go all consipracy theory on the origins of the Beetle. Numerous individuals were working on the idea. And one of the reasons Porsche left Daimler Benz at the time was that they had no interest in the kind of downmarket vehicle he was trying to create. The air cooled simplicity of the Beetle had nothing to do with North Africa or Russia. Remember the Germans only got into NA as an aside to help the Itallians who messed up. That was simply not on the horizon in 1933. The air cooled requirements were simply for reliability and cheapness. Nobody but the nobility in Europe had garages in the 1930's so air cooled cars meant they wouldn't freeze overnight in winter. And of course they were cheaper. - Peter.
