The U.S. headlights weren't too bad when paired with the Euro or pre-1974 U.S. bumpers.

I never really gave the R107 serious thought as a base for a performance car because I always thought that it was a bit porky. However, given the ever-escalating curb weight of today's cars, it would be considered a middleweight today. I wonder how much weight would be shaved off a '74+ U.S. spec SL if the bumpers reverted to 1972 U.S. specs?
