Well, we didn't pass inspection.
Railing for the stairs was not completed. Duh! And apparently the first floor floor needs to be insulated in the basement. First I've heard of that, but hey, I'm good with keeping the floor warm and it's on the contractors dime. Those will be completed this morning and the inspectors are coming back after lunch sometime. Hoping to start moving things in, at least upstairs, this weekend. Still looking like 4/1 for full move-in but they still need to build the back landing (need to pour footings) and paint the exterior over the next month or so. I still owe them a sizable chunk of money so they're not going anywhere.

Even worse is wall paneling may come back into vogue.. I still have a couple of bathrooms to change out basically only because the fixtures have a dated color. First floor insulatedb by code is a new one on me. Other than under the heated bathroom floors.

The upstairs is all cleaned and ready for some stuff! We'll start moving the kids' bureaus, bed frames, side tables, summer clothes and whatnot this weekend. Our house is so close to the rental and I have access to box trucks so even though paying a mover to do everything all at once on Tue or Wed would be paid for by insurance, it's actually less of a headache for me and my oldest kids to do a little at a time. Plus it lets my little guy see us bringing our things back into our house. They're still working on the first floor so we can't move our bedroom, dining room and living room stuff until they're done, which is still looking like Tue-Wed. But at least we can get a good chunk done. Mattresses are just on the floors, clothes we're wearing are in boxes, food and beer in the fridge. The insulation was new to me as well, I don't know if it's the whole floor or just in the addition as new construction. I'll have to check it out after work. There are a bunch of new regs that were enacted Jan. 1, I suspect the insulation was on it, and apparently there's another wave coming in July. Or the inspectors are just in the mood to ball bust the contractors, who have seemed to annoyed the inspectors (who have been very nice to us). Our camp in Maine has some wood paneling thanks to my late uncle residing there for awhile back in the late-70's while he was building his house a couple doors down. It's groovy!

Congrats Swamp, the floors look great and you got your CO!
I'm surprised the contractor didn't know the basement floor had to be insulated, were on the 2012IRC code in CT. It came in last year.

Soon enough!
I would say I'm not surprised that they didn't, but it could have been an oversight and they forgot about it. It's all insulated now! Sure makes the old part of the basement feel low! I may have to take it out in the walkway area to the full headroom in the addition. I found myself constantly ducking. Although it is only about 6'6" headroom.

There's nothing like fresh interior paint to make you want to yell "Hey, keep your hands off the walls!"

Looks like it will be about two years until the people across the streets total loss from the fire is completed. The lady asked me to put a shelf unit in the upstairs closet a long time ago and the closet walls were the most out of plumb I had ever seen.
If it had been declared a partial loss the contractor would have had nightmares. The insurance companies locally have been pretty generous and flexiable in these major claims issues for the past few years. Burning your way to wealth is a needed book now. I have watched it done and gotten away with. Years ago I had an oportunity to buy that house and fifty acres it sat on for little money. Even way back then I did not know how the house could be practically fixed. I also never thought property prices would get so high in this area. |

It's been a hectic week of moving and spring rush at work. Run around all day and run around all night. It must be making me stronger, right?
All nice and new and purty with all of our junky and beaten up and mismatched furniture almost all moved in. Having gone through all of this, I think a complete loss would have been easier to deal with.
