My family is filled with teachers/educators. No complaints from any of them.

The beginning of a new career path is often a little bumpy. Ride it out, gain more experience, find a mentor...

Hah, you think an education degree prepares anyone for the classroom? . . . or the real world . . .

As the son of a teacher, I can pretty firmly say that like a lot of employers, it really depends where you work and the people you work with. Handful of my friends are public school teachers and if heard stories of the bs they put up with. On the other hand they seem very happy. Hang in there for a bit, it seems like this job is made for the type of person you are (of course speaking through the Internet).

Need more details. There's probably about 6 credits of useful info in a EDU degree.

my sister did several years as a teach for america special ed teacher in MS before becoming a lawyer. She dealt with 12-14 year olds usually.

She said A- that the teaching school she attended as part of the program was pretty irrelevant to the reality of teaching, past things like organization

B- that teaching is a hell of a lot harder than attending a highly rated and competitive law school.

and C- that if you dont have the personality to control the classroom, you are in trouble.

if you feel this way, consider adult education. You can teach people who are motivated.

Or work as a contractor who trains in corporations.

You have no background in educational theory or practice? Figured since you can DO it, you can teach others? A hard row to hoe.

My background is middle school. I've been working with kindergarteners last year and this and it took me about a month last year to figure out I was in WAY over my head in spite of several Ed degrees. Now taking Early Childhood Ed Psych and courses in Language acquisition early literacy. I thought I knew all that was needed.... not so much.

Gotta ask, what's causing your struggle?

FWIW - my older sister is an educator who works with special needs/developmentally disabled high schoolers. Tons of heart, and tons of patience - and loves every minute of it. My younger sister is studying education and early childhood development, and volunteers 3 days a week working with young children who have developmental disabilities. Less patience than my older sister, but has a good heart and loves every minute of it!

Also should add - my brother in law just completed a career change from business to education, and is a high school special ed teacher. Haven't heard any complaints for him, either.

Never go into teaching

Kids that have behavior problems, lack of interest, and just flat out disrespectful. I give them everything they need and I listen and I try to help but they just screw around when they need to focus.
I teach in a low income area and the quality of students is low because the smart ones and well behaved students jumped ship for the charter schools and academies. I have a handful of good kids. The rest are just a pain.

I now teach because I love to and am fairly good at it. Or so I'm told. I don't need the work. With all my income streams my take-home is triple what it ever was when I taught/administered full time. With all the new hoops that have to be jumped through and focus on mass testing many times a year, I'd be hard pressed to recommend it as a career to anyone I cared about.

Don you have to lead and motivate from my non formal school teaching perspective. I am having some issues with the younger generations as well.

Had perhaps three good teachers in my formal education at best. Things educationally have probably not improved much since then. At least we respected teachers for trying to do their jobs long ago. That is somewhat history in too many cases now as well.

Parents also seem to expect teachers or society to somehow make up for their poor parenting skills. Overall It has looked pretty dismal to me in these areas for many years already. I no longer get frustrated by these things today as they are just what they are.

I remember reading years ago that about five percent of the north American population had to be really functional for the system overall to hold together. Times have chanced drastically but the educational objectives have not kept pace with todays needs enough. I also have no ideal what the ultimate cost of this will become. I almost suspect it has already had a sizable impact.
