Steyr Aug A3 advice

I have someone who wants to pay me off with a NIB Steyr Aug A3.

ASSUMING it is legit and he has the papers to prove it, what is it worth?

Like Pvt Cowboy in Full metal Jacket said about ARVN rifles, "Never fired and dropped only once".

Part of me wants to consider it "used" since it isn't from a dealer with the MSRP at 2099

There are 2 versions according to the Steyr Arms site:

USA

NATO

What is the difference?

So jealous since I can't get these in my fascist state.

The difference between the two versions are the mag's. The NATO version takes AR mags the other takes Steyr mags. One half dozen or the other really, the Steyr mags are a bit more to buy.

Steyr Aug A3 For Sale

As for pricing look at auctions on gunbroker.com and see where they end. That will give you a good idea of the market right now for a particular gun. Overall the firearms market is over saturated.

IMHO its probably worth $1,700-$1,900.

If it was a real Aug with the happy switch, built in scope, barrels etc it would be worth around $100k. I think their are only 2-3 in the US.

If that is all that it boils down to, I suppose it won't make a difference which he has since they do say that if you can shoot a NATO round, you can shoot Rem 223 but if you can only shoot Rem 223, you might not want to go the other way. IDK. I don't usually get that much around military guns.

Over saturated isn't good for me if I want to move it later on to get the money back. Not sure what I would use a 5.56 NATO gun for. Maybe if I shoot Prairie Dogs.

No it isn't a real Aug with the happy switch. I thought the built in scope is no longer present? That would be nice so I can put what I want.

Its a new one so it has rails, and Eotech would be your best optic for it.

.223 and 5.56 are more or less interchangeable in modern firearms like this. Most have 5.56 chambers.

5.56 is loaded to higher chamber pressures, which with some old sporting guns might be an issue.

A modern military rifle will suck up anything like a cheap hooker.

The sporting rifle market is over saturated right now until their is another political scare.

I suppose it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world to "buy" it by wiping out his debt to me and selling at the next political scare. I really don't want to rip him off seeing as how he has helped me with stuff and I might want to trade favors so I will have to look around and see how much the trade in is and give him a little more to be fair. Probably something between trade in and store price for a used one.

Hattie suggested Eotech. Not sure what the range on the gun is. Any idea? I put magnifying scopes on my hunting rifles but these sort of guns are a different animal and I am unfamiliar with them. I would suppose a 3X magnification might be nice.

I am reading about the Eotech having issues because of the way it is and the charging handle?

This was years ago, I was shooting a decently close range as we were not at my uncle's shooting range in Ellijay, GA but on a small property in Middle-of-Nowhere, FL. I think it didn't have the sscope on it. Actually it may have been a PS90 that I shot (my uncle owns probably 120 guns of varying types), but I do remember handling one of these that day.
Wiki says the effective firing range on one is 980ft so a scope would probably be a nice addition if you decide to keep it.

Supposedly there is a gun dealer that will be willing to sell his A3 for $1600. I will go take a look at it and see if that is real. That will be what I think I should base my price on.

I have the EOTech HHS II sight on an AR. Its a good CQB sight and the flip to the side 3x scope is nice for longer ranges.

EOTechs reticles are fairly large. At 50 yds magnified, it obscures a good part of the 1/2" dot on my targets. At 100yds, its a guess where the black dot is. Not a tack driver type of sight, but is a good CQB option with its big, bright reticle. Firing .556 ammo with 16" barrel, center reticle is usually sighted in at 50yds and same aim point will hit ~1" high at 100yds and a tad low at 200yds. Lower reticle is 500yds. Bottom of circle is 7yds. Very functional.

Aimpoints reticles are usually much finer and would allow targeting more like a classic scopes crosshair where the aim point isn't obscured from view.

Should be able to get the HHS II for under $1,000 now.

Probably the first gun I get that isn't used for hunting. Not sure what the application is besides plinking? If I can get the Aug for $`1600, I probably will take his used one for about that and wipe out $1500 of his debt to me.

Anyone got any idea what to use this gun for? Besides to sell at some point, that is. I have never owned a military style rifle. My 22 rifles and pistols are for shooting squirrels and paper. Is this a target/plinking gun or is there a hunting application?

I have the Eotech 552 without the magnifier because I built my AR as a QCB rifle, and I didn't want to spend the money for an ACOG.

Which is what an Aug is, although it does have a 20in barrel, its still a door kicker.

But Trijicon makes a very reasonably priced scope that I might put on my next AR build.

Trijicon Accupoint 3-9X40, Mil-Dot Crosshair and LT104-1 Mount | LaRue Tactical
May be OK on an Aug.
