Nail/screw gun oopions?

I am looking for a screw that can be applied as quickly and easily as nails in an air gun. We are modifying 25 trusses and installing nailer plates which need a gazillion screws installed to attach to the 2x4 truss members.

It'll take a guy a month to install all of them the normal way!

You are looking for a screw gun that does not rotate the screw threads into the truss material, but shoots the screw in like a nail installed by a nail gun?

I've never used one. Actually didn't know they existed until I read this thread and figured...someone somewhere made something like that. It just has to exist!

Might be able to rent a deck screw gun of the type without the long handle. The one I have seen is or would be impossible to use with its long handle I suspect. Logically there should be a shorter one.

Buy the screws like machine gun belts for one if it exists and I suspect they do. Deck screws are moisture resistant as well. So they should not rot with time if some moisture is an issue.

I used to make plywwod gussets and glue and nail them on. The glue joint being much stronger than the fasteners. Inspected some I did this way 40 years ago reciently. Still as good as the day I built those trusses.

What kind of nails did you use? Gussets one side or both of the members?

Hilti

Check out your local Hilti dealer. they have a decking screw gun set uo in a stand up frame that just might do the trick.

Are you screwing into wood or metal joist/trusses?

You need an autofeed screw gun, I have an Hitachi for doing floors.

RIDGID 3 in. Drywall and Deck Collated Screwdriver-R6791 at The Home Depot

Or the less expensive model. The Hilti set up will cost two or three times as much but it will work better and do it for 20 years.

2in screws are about the max though, I can't imagine you needing more for 2x4's.

I can find in a deck-building book of mine a picture of an adapter for a regular drill that allows just a regular old power drill to work with collated screws. I'll look and see if there is name brand or something. The (newish) book claims that it costs $27.

A 2" screw isn't going to grab much of the second 2x4.
