Parking goofiness
We have a parking problem in our neighborhood. It's become hipster central for Denver. Lots of new bars and clubs. On a weekend, if you leave your on-stree parking space after around 5pm, you'll be walking blocks back to your house. So our neighborhood has been working with the city to come up a plan to reduce congestion and keep parking available for residents. We got a comprehensive plan in the mail a couple of weeks ago.
So, last week I'm driving down the street and see a public works truck doing something with a parking sign. I come back to check it out and they have taken a coveted on street public parking space and turned it into a CAR SHARE PARKING ONLY. Zip Car parking. All others will be towed. It turns out Zipcar is a subsidiary of one of the big car rental companies which rents short term. So the city just took a public parking spot away from the public and gave it to a for-profit company to park their car anytime and all the time. They already allow Cars-To-Go to park in violation of all parking regulations and meters for as long as they want in the neighborhood even though everyone else has to pay at meters or obey the parking for only XX hours signs. I contacted our parking management plan manager at the city and complained that they had said nothing to the neighborhood about taking away spaces and giving them to private companies. He said he had nothing to do with it. It's another division in the city department So have other people heard of this? What do you think? In my view, if some private company wants to keep a car in our neighborhood to make a profit, they should be renting a parking space from a private lot--not taking up parking spaces used by neighborhood residents. Just a rant.

I'd be ticked too. I can probably not name all the ways the local government is screwing me....subsidizing competing business, etc. Adding taxes after the fact, etc.
Grrrrrrrr! Its hard enough competing with other hungry businessmen without having the city step in and take away part of the pie.

I have no driveway nor garage. Nor does anyone else on my half-block.

Start digging through building laws to see if parking is required to build a house.
I'd also get a map of other Zip Car locations and talk to the locals. |

We do have those on many blocks, including ours. 2 hr parking only for non-residents. Residents can park 24 hours. Given the fact that those are necessary, why the hell did the city take away a spot and give it to a private company? And, if they gave one, they're almost certain to give more. Damn.
