Anybody been to Machu Piccu?
 

I have been musing about making it my next bucket list trip. I have a client from Peru who is encouraging me.

Odd timing -- was just talking about this with the lovely lady. I think we are trying to make it down there in 2015 with a friend. Plan is to hike the trail for a few days and do some backpacking.

In Chicago? Yes. Went there when my sister was still living there. Had the Seco de Cordero which was very tasty. The corn juice didn't really do it for me, though. ;)

Have a good friend who went a few years ago. She was from Indiana and went with a college group and got a great price. Looks stunning. I'd like to go.

Would love to go. Also want to see the Nazca lines one day.

Today I found a book I forgot I had in my Library titled "The Incas and other ancient Andean Civilizations". It has a spectacular collection of Maccu Miccu pictures. I have been researching about driving there. It sounds a bit hair raising. The reports about driving in Greece were bad too but not as bad as Peru. I'll probably limit my driving to areas where there's not too much traffic. I believe I can probably hire a taxi with an English speaking driver for not much more than renting a car.

My oldest daughter is planning now to come along. So, I have opened up the trip to all my kids, grandkids and spousal units.

Today I looked at the panamerica highway which we could drive from Lima to Macchu Picchu more or less.

I ordered a detailed map of Peru today.

Does anybody know if there is a way to determine the altitude of a road? The road from the coast to Cuzco does not look too far but appears it may be as high as 14,000'. I'd be reluctant to try driving at that altitude for fear of altitude sickness.

No doubt you've heard that you should have your passage to MP secured before you go. I've read of people who make the trip only to discover their is no available passage to the site. Walking it sounds preferable in some regards but that would be one hell of a workout. I spent a few months in CO at 10,000 feet and you sorta get used to it but I was pretty fit in those days.

I think one of the passes on that trek is just under 14K but I'd be surprised if the highway to Cuzco goes through any passes that high. There are two highway routes, one is longer but less mountainous. Haven't been there but I studied up on it once, thinking I might be able to go.

Google Earth has an altitude indicator. You might be able to find it by tracing the highway with your cursor.
