'65 Chrysler 300

Anybody know much about them? It's a non letter car, normal 300. Four door hardtop, 383 and automatic. Buckets and a console floor shift. I'm kinda drawn to it, am I crazy? Nice looker, runs n drives.

The 383 has a load of power. My BIL had a 64 Plymouth ex police car with that motor and the torqueflite. If you were on one of those slippery asphalt roads and kicked it down running 60 mph it's spin the rear tires.....course they were those old ridiculous bias ply tires but at the time the best available.

Does it have the cool chrome stuff waterfalling down the back seat and joining the consol?

yup. pretty original, paint is an ok respray, but she's amazingly rust free. gonna need carpet, but that's not expensive. Just looks like a fun car...ie, ZZ Top "let's drive that old Chrysler to Mexico boy"...type ride, lol

Probably the best-looking of all the '60's Chryslers. I'm surprised at the 4-door/bucket seat/floorshift combination. I can't recall another American sedan of that era which combined 4 doors and an automatic floor shift.

I saw one at Carlisle this year, but it was in like #5 or 6 condition- it needed everything.

Saw it on craigslist too.

Bear in mind that the Chrysler engine families of this era:

6 cyl: 170, 198 225

8 cyl " A-size" engines: 273, 318, 340, 360

8 cyl "B-size" engines: 361, 383, 400, 413, 426, 440, 508 (used only in Int's gas trucks)

The 727 B tranny housing is different from the 727 A series. Get a spare if you can

PS: 1965 is the last year Chrysler made a separate-body-on-frame car.

I have owned 318, 360, 361, 383, 400, 440. All have lots of power and for the most part are easy to maintain. Your biggest problem with the 383 may be carb parts and exhaust manifolds.

The 1966 Imperial was body-on-frame.

That may be, but 65 was the last year for the Chryslers.

Before Txjake takes his wrenches and crowbar out to effect a body-off restoration: Chrysler moves to Unibody (unit-body construction): 1960

Most went to unibody in 1960, the rest (except for the Imperial) went to unibody in 1961. The Imperial held onto its 1957 frame until the end of the 1966 model year, becoming the New Yorker's upscale unibody cousin for 1967, with the point of all this being that the 1965 300 was already unibody.

Txjake 12-16-2014 03:25 PM

no worries. while it actually drove and handled and stopped very well, I passed on it. The interior needed too much work and the '65 is a fairly unique platform regarding the bright bits. Since this is only the second one I have seen, the first being in 1967 (I was 10), I can't see getting it.
