Anybody good w/ shop vacs?
 

So I ended up getting a shop vac that was left at a house, it's a 4 gallon 4.5hp 9amp model.

Worked nicely for a while but now it's VERY loud, loud enough to almost hurt your ears to use it. It still works fine and sucks like it always did though.

I took it apart down to the motor and didn't see any obvious issues, I also didn't see a filter (not even sure where there would be one) I'm sure that's not ideal, bad enough to kill it?

Any ideas what could be the issue? There's no obvious damage that I could see and like I said it still sucks same as it ever did it's just ridiculously loud. Not like a grinding loud either just normal noise but amplified greatly.

I'm at a point where I would have to start disassembling the motor itself which I think involves drilling out rivets, this is a little beyond me.

Hmm they just get loud w/ age? Never heard one this bad.

It was like one day it was fine next it's twice as loud.

I might try spraying some WD-40 around that always fixes everything! :rolleyes:

I've had 2 where the bearings in the motors went and basically seized up. Apparently even companies with decent reputations have trouble dealing their bearings from the inevitable wet of a wet dry vac.

What? I can't understand your posts. One of the ones that quit on me was a rigid. The shipping was more expensive and a hassle and just getting a new one

Does the motor sound like it is running faster? If so, the field winding is likely failing ( windings starting to short out of the circuit ). When the field weakens, speed increases.

I have a Rigid vac ( 6 or 10 gal? ) that is very quiet.

Have a old Sears 4 gal that is bearable, there is a 2.5 gal " Shop Vac " brand at Mom and Dads that is unbearable.

Well, given the price of travel I might wait until two are out.

It just says shop-vac, no rigid...

Don't know what store it's from plus no receipt.

In the brief time I ran it after it got very loud, seemed to be "working" a little harder than I remember. But not to a great extent either.

Maybe something is slowly dying..

Anyone know where I could get a filter? Seems like a newer model just based on styling.

Take it for a stroll to the Genesee and see if it floats.

I'll drag it behind me by the hose while talking to myself. lol

The filter acts like a muffler.

Try putting a filter on it, it should have one and it's easier than taking the motor apart.

Maybe look at the "quiet series" they have, I have one which gets the job done nicely and it's a littler easier on the ears.
