The early TBI looks pretty much exactly like carb with the air filter on. Should be able to tell if you pull the cap

My OBD 1 & 2 capable scanner gives live feed at sufficient speed for diagnosis. I hooked it up to TunerPro RT and the datastream looked Ok. Same with DIACOM and Datamaster. Enough for datalogging anyway.

O2 sensor might be it but be careful. If it breaks off in pipe, you are so screwed.

Code 42 is what happens when you disconnect the tan wire that controls the timing advice from the ECM. IT MAY BE a current issue or a history from a bit ago. You have to erase it so we can tell if it returns or not.

I'll need to wash it before I take any pics.

It's not in quite as good a shape as this one, paint anyway, but it's close. The paint and window scheme are identical.

Good tips. I've not removed an O2 sensor in a GM product before. That would be a drag. I'm thinking some kind of solvent then a torch on the pipe.

I googled "service engine soon 1989 Chevy" - got all kinds of hits.

This vehicle is from the OBD1 era. AutoZone will most likely not be able to read the code(s)unless they have a reader that queries both OBD1 & OBDII. I doubt it.

See the URL below.

Jumper 2 ODB1 ports to read "blinks". A short piece of 16 ga. wire is sufficient. You count the blinks. In all of the OBD1 codes I've read this way, you'll see for example - 4 consistent blinks, meaning the number 4. After that a pause; then maybe 3 blinks, meaning the number 3.

Put the two together and you have error code 43. Again - an example.

You'll see the "blinks" on the dash and most often it will be the check engine light or whatever light you have that's illuminated that will flash.

If there are multiple codes stored, another set will be displayed. You keep reading until it repeats.

OBD1 codes are all over the WEB and you may find useful videos on youtube that show the "blink" method in a OBD1 vehicle. It does not have to be specific to your '89 Chevy to be of value.

Prepared more for those not familiar with reading OBD1 codes than this particular post. OBD1 ports to jumper will vary.

Actually, Autozone does have a scanner. I borrowed it last weekend because mine is broken and I needed data from my 91 Corvette.

Looks nice!
Are you using it for cargo or for passenger?

This thread is making me curious what the service engine soon light means on my express. I have a year and a half left i can ignore it safely until it has to pass inspection

Or you break something. I have seen that before. There aren't many emissions stuff there that you can ignore without at least affecting your gas mileage and worst case scenario, burn something out.

its been lit for as long as ive owned the van. fuel economy is fine for the model, I keep it in decent tune.

Time is money. The winter is downtime, so I can tinker with the van probably in feb. In the meantime its got a few more dump runs to do for me before I get into finer repair problems like lights. If it exhibits a single problem like poor fuel economy or drivability concerns, ill tinker sooner.

Ive tuned it up, redone all the brakes, stopped all the leaks (except power steering), and put decent rubber on it.

The "Service Engine" light in my '89 Volvo 780 indicates I have driven 3000 miles since the last oil change and want's a fresh oil change by Volvo's order.

Mine is not that nice. Not too far off though. Using it for cargo. I took out the one rear seat that was in it. I bought it for $1500 about 5 years ago - had 129K. It was the third I looked at. It drove so much better and looked better and was going for about the same price as the two others so it was an easy choice. Is surprisingly nimble and responsive. Even the cruise control still works though it's temperamental. It will hold at the speed you set for a minute or two and then slowly slip back. After about 30 minutes of driving and setting and resetting it several times, it starts to behave better. I should look into fixing it.
