Hey,

I've decided to 'invest' some of my disposable in a nice watch. What watches do you guys have, and what do you think of the different brands? I don't know a lot about them, so any help would be great.

I'm currently very interested in the Oris Big Crown Original:

check out Tag Heuer .they start at a few hundred and go to a few thousand.

Hi Russ:

You might try a search for the key word "watches". There are a couple of dozen threads in the archives (Including one on Tags) regarding watches and cars, many with photos. Omega, Rollex, and even more exotic types. Have a fun search for the perfect watch. (I have a 50 year old Bulova, and an Omega pocket watch, but mostly just use the display on my cell phone and skip the jewelry - a habit left over from 25 years in labs working around high voltages, lasers, and chemicals.)

Personally I think some of the best looking watches are Cartier. There is just something about them that just looks right.

Tag heur is very good, breitling has some nice watches too.

Omega makes some nice ones as well.

If you are looking to spend less than $500 then definately look into tag heur etc. Cartier, you wont find them for cheap.

Thanks for your replies.

I'm not keen on the look of the Tag Heuers.. don't remember seeing any that I particularly like.

But a cartier..? They're *very* nice, but I haven't seen them for less than around $ 1300. Can you let me in on where I can find them? :-)

I'm a big fan of Hamilton, an old American brand that is now owned by the Swatch company, which owns Omega, Tissot, and many other brands.

I don't know if they are sold in the U.K., but they're worth a look. Very rugged and classic designs, with the best Swiss movements - automatic or Quartz.

They also have a website where you can view the watches.

I have always thought the Oris is a great watch. I would love to buy one myself. I take this view for the following reasons. The Oris has some unique features: the big crown, the date hand, and the transparent back. These features give it character; they also derive from the application of the maxim "form over function". The big crown was intended to enable aviators to adjust the watch without removing their gloves. Also the Oris is automatic, rather than quartz.

Finally, unlike Rolex, Cartier, Tag Heuer &c, nobody will recognise the Oris; it is discreet. I don't know about you, but that is really important to me: a Rolex would just offend my clients (or maybe attract criminals). But the expert knows the Oris is a good watch that punches well above its price point. Don't buy the Oris if you want to be flash; do buy it if you can take pleasure in a possession because of its inherent quality not its status value.

My favourite Oris watch is the base model or any circular model with a plain leather strap. They never used to come with metal bands and I regard these as concessions to fashion. A matter of personal choice.

I do believe a Rolex is a good watch, but starting point is about £1,000. Also too flashy for me. The jeweller who sold me my watch persuaded me not to buy the more expensive Cartier (which I wasn't really interested in anywat): he explained that while it was a good watch, you paid a lot for the brand name.

I think the Omega DeVille watches are very nice and low key, as are some of the Longines (sp?) watches, which again are very high quality but lack a certain brand value.

You could get a Sekonda. Probably keep time better than any of the above.

My brother got a very nice almost new cartier santos from ebay for $1500.00

I got a nice santos replica from hong kong, looks great, and works well for $150.00

I will have a real one soon, but for now, 90% of the people out there cannot tell its fake.

The Cartier with the automatic movement is a great watch. never needs batteries.

My father is a watch connesure (Wow bad spelling there) and has many watches. Out of every watch he has, and he has some beautiful antique wristwatches and pocket watches. He loves his cartier's the most. In fact he has 3 cartiers. a Santos he has had for like 20 years, a gold panther, and some other one that he got for way below retail when he was in hong kong. He priced the watch here in los angeles at well over $10k and he paid around 6k for his. I'm not sure what the others cost him, but I hardly ever see him without one of them on his wrist.

I recieved a longines watch on my birthday.. very nice watch.

Keeping with the theme of this forum, perhaps you should look for a brand that has a connection with automobiles and racing! Omega, Longines and Heuer (pre-TAG) were both "official" time keepers for auto racing.

Or, if you want to match a German-made watch with your German-made car, you can consider brands such as Glasutte Original, Union, Nivrel and Nomos.

Modern marketing arrangements have given auto themes to watches made by Girard-Perregaux (Ferrari), Eberhard (Tazio Nuvolari) and IWC or Eterna (Porsche).

I knew you are a good man. My Dad had Bulova wrist watch he wore daily, a nice watch, he really loved that watch! He also had an Omega pocket watch he wore with his Sunday best.

I like good watches myself, I define them as accurate time pieces not jewelry! My daily wearer is a Tag, for those tight cuff occassions I have a Movado musuem which is the thinest watch I've seen and comes with scratch resistent crystal.
(trust me I know!)

If your worried about not offending your clients and are concerned with cost, get the Hamilton.

You get the same movement as Omega, but pay half the amount.

And they're not nearly as popular, so you get an air of exclusivity, and also a great conversation starter.

I like both Breitling and Tag Heuer. If you want people to know your watch then I would say a Rolex it is. The Rolex Submariner and the Datejust are definitely my favorite. I probably would never wear a Rolex. However, that's me.

German watches...

Check out watches made by A. Lange & Sohne . I've only seen some and none of 'em is affordable IMO. However if that's what you're after... then check it out.

They are beautiful beautiful watches. Kinda remind me of the 108/109 cars, or anything older than that.
