California roadside emissions survey?

Has anyone been stopped for one of these?

Surprise! Bay Area drivers have cars examined at random smog checkpoints - ContraCostaTimes.com

https://www.bar.ca.gov/Consumer/Roadside_Inspection_Program.html

It's voluntary and there are no consequences but I wonder...

I'm game. I'll just make sure they take note of the Nevada plates. Wait, don't diesels get a free pass on smog in California?

No, not any more, now, I hear, unless your car is a 1975 model year or older diesel or passenger one or a gasser one in California but and the w123 Mercedes Benz and get through in Counties in with no emission testing, that I DO know....

Yes, pre 98 diesels are smog exempt in California.

The road side smog check is voluntary. Even if you take it and fail it its of no consequence to the driver. They are looking for cars that recently passed the real smog check only to fail it road side. This way can identify corrupt smog check stations. In previous campaigns they found some stations where up to half the cars that passed the real smog check failed the roadside toast.

Vroom Vroom.

2 wheels don't require smog.

With that said, the Miata barely passed smog - HC at 15MPH was supposed to have like 66PPM and was measured to have 65PPM... O_O

I wish they would do it here and cite the vehicles that fail.

I was pulled over going south from Oregon to CA. They wanted to check me for fruit flies.

Officer asked if I was transporting any fruit.

I said yes.

He stepped back from my door with his hand nervously on his side arm and asked me to 'explain'.

I told him I had a banana, an apple and an orange in the cooler on back seat for my lunch, an I had already eaten one of the bananas and that is why there is an empty peal.

He checked it out, and after a long nerve wracking pause let me go.

Thank gawd I didn't fart

Exclamation here's why:

Time flies like an arrow.

Fruit flies like a banana.

About ten years ago, while driving through Houston, I was pulled over by a Cop for excessive emissions.

I asked him what the deal was and he said I had just driven by a remote sensing device that was checking individual cars emissions as they entered the highway. Mine was off the chart.

I pointed out this sounded right since I was I was in a 300D and I threw in that Diesels were exempt from smog regulations. He said all he knew was he was told to pull me over and give me a ticket. Then he said to hold on while he called all of this in.

Anyway... This was the first day of the program and my car was the first diesel that had driven past the sensors. There was a bit of jumping the gun but in their defense it did have to be the worst somgging they had ever seen.

The Cop said he was sorry and I told him well, we all just learned something and other small talk.

I don't know if the remote sensing program is still in effect. I do know that after a few days there was a major uproar over it since you could be issued a ticket for failing an on the spot test that did not involve a tailpipe sniffer but a LASER device of some type.

Somewhere around 1994 I was in Los Angeles and they were randomly pulling over Cars and checking to see if the Emissions equipment was connected correctly. I was driving the Diesel Volvo so I was waved by.

Also the Police are allowed to pull over any Car they believe is smoking excessively. I had the Officer writing a Citation for that on an old Gasser I had but He got a call and did not finish it.

I remember that about that time the air quality people in Texas where upset about the sudden rise in smoking trucks. Not just excessive diesel smoke but oil burners as in worn out rings oil burners.

A bit of research showed the majority of the trucks were out of California where the laws allowed the excessive smokers to be pulled over and ticketed. The solution was to buy new trucks and sell the old ones in Texas.

A twist on that goes on here in Oklahoma in that Texas has such strict inspection laws and Oklahoma has none so cars that can't pass the smog tests in Texas are often bought north and sold on tote the note lots here.

They have roadside testing here but its a good thing. Two trips past running clean and you dont have to go in for an emissions test when its due. Its about the only good thing in the whole damned program. Ive heard that the entire program here is such a boondoggle that the cost to the taxpayers to remove one gross polluter from the road was more than the cost of a new car.
