The head is not cracked though it got so hot it loosened the head bolts and two valve guides. We're getting gaskets and a 30 thousandths shim and reinstalling the head asap.

Something also to check, if the head is badly warped, the cam bores are out of alignemnt also.

Pull the cam, lay a straightedge across the lower cam bores. You would have to dig around for a spec as I don't recall what it is.

Some automotive machine shops measure warpage, put that amount of shims under each end of he head then bolt the center to a plate. This goes in an oven to bend the head back. Getting too hot in the oven is bad as it reverts the aluminum to soft condition.

Look on the Goodson.com site for what I'm describing.

Homer does that routinely. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Did it ever actually overheat as far as the gauge showed?

You took it to Home Depot?

A head can overheat even with good coolant temps.

If the liquid level is physically lower than the top of cooling system an air pocket can form in the high spots. ( and stop the heater from blowing hot air ) the head receives sporadic cooling and runs hotter than the rest of the motor. Overall coolant temps are OK because you have good flow through the rad.

Coolant temp is an average of the hottest part of an engine. And, if all coolant is lost, the gauge won't read high as the sensor needs coolant touching the tip to be accurate.

Homer Banes of Banes Machine here in Lafayette.

And that is a good description of the cooling situation when the coolant level is compromised.
