I like.

Although I'm guessing that insuring a for a 19-year-old male for a Miata would be a bit more expensive than insuring a 19-year-old for a 1994 Buick...

You'd be surprised -- at least the old Miatas were in the same insurance class as various slow sedans.

Hm. Hm.

That's good to keep in the back of the mind...

Probably not, I'm really not that much older than you and I've never had insurance be outrageous.

Saw the '15 Miata at Detroit, they showed it in LHD and RHD for whatever reason. I liked it, like it a lot more than the NC. Personally Miata's don't do it for me, but it looks like something that will make Miata people very happy.

Many.

In fact it was the Buckeye Miata Club is who got me started autocrossing. So not only have I driven one just down the road, I've autocrossed NAs and NBs. N/A, Turbo, and SC. They are an absolute hoot to autocross.

But that doesn't mean I need to buy one. I'd rather ride in yours, or trade you a drive in whatever I am autocrossing that day to drive a lap in yours. I can't identify what it is in particular, but they just don't do it for me to the point that I need to own one.

I have driven a couple of Miatas on a loaner basis and while they did evoke a grin at first, after the first hour or so I felt like I was just driving a basic Japanese car that happened to be a convertible two door. Now, there's not much not to like about that, but perhaps I was expecting the experiences I had driving MGs, TRs, Healys and a brief time in an Elan S2. As mentioned in another thread, I have come to look at "retro" styling on modern engineering as a compromise of both.

What experience in those old cars is superior? ....unless you are entertained by being broken down!

Don't underestimate the "charm" of unreliability. Honestly, there is a value in faults and the difference in relationship between a fussy, temperamental and challenging motor car and one that is basically not much more exciting to own and drive than a toaster oven on wheels.

Early sports cars had to be owned by enthusiasts, while today it does not require much more than having a modest amount of money.

Well if you drive it like an economy car you may miss the fun.

You gotta push a little to have the fun!

Driving a sports car slowly is like having sex without an orgasm.

Never said anything about driving the Miatas slow . . . or the other roadsters, so I'm not sure what you were getting at. Perhaps the point I was trying to make, clumsily I guess, was that owning and driving an older sports car (even when it was new) was rewarding because it wasn't as easy or simple as it is today. We are spoiled, I suppose, by synchro gearboxes, EFI, ABS and the other technological advances that make cars more reliable, easier to control and maintain. Sometimes I try to explain it by comparing it to the current state of photographic equipment. Digital vs Film . . . with AF/AE metering, stabilized lenses . . . and a bit further back . . . sheet film vs. canister and cartridges.

Dunno, just reacting to your comparison of driving a Miata to an economommy car.
