Radio Shack is still a thing? Next you're going to tell me gasoline is under $2 and Suge Knight killed a man. This 90s flashback never ends.

Adapt or die.

And as I believe MTI pointed out, they somehow managed to not adapt since the 90's and die a slow death.

There have also been reports that Amazon Is in Talks to Buy RadioShack Stores.

Well their business just didn't make sense anymore. Once people realized they can get the electronic components for a fraction of the price online, their stores were largely obsolete. They've also been confused with their product offerings, from cell phone plans to remote control cars it seems like they just asked "does it run on batteries" to bring it to store vs having a solid marketing plan. I've used them quite a bit for when I need a random rocker switch or run out of flux of something, have one in town.

All electronic brick and mortar stores have had issues . RS for years couldn't decide what they wanted to be . Best buy was hanging by a thread and seem to rebounded . I don't think anyone will miss RS. Frys customer service is not good due to most of them on commission . I don't like going there . It is s fun place to go though since they go so deep in all categories .

Are they like NewEgg just brick and motor?
Being an old fart, I had never heard of NewEgg until my oldest son wanted a new laptop. He sent me a link, I ordered online on 12/22 and it was delivered on 12/24 with standard shipping. Hard to beat that.

Just to clarify, I meant "somehow" as in I was amazed they lasted as long as they did rather than they were somehow successful despite the criticism of their failure to adapt.

Best Buy and Fry's Electronics are likely next on the list. Big box electronic sales have way too much competition from other non-traditional retailers . . . Costco, Sam's Club, Amazon . . . right on down to Monoprice for that one cable you need.

Ah of course...I uh...saw that

Newegg is pretty good, not as good since they got bought by Amazon (seems to be a trend). My favorite is microcenter -- I have one locally but their PC components are unbeatable price-wise when they are on sale.

That I don't understand. If I make $8 an hour whether I sell or not, WGAS? OTOH, if I made $5 plus commission, I'd be like a waiter and be kissing your hairy ass all day long so you buy from me or so I would think.

I'm embarrassed to say how often there's Amazon box(es) on the porch when I get home. Even non-perishable groceries. For someone with precious little free time, physically going to the store is the last thing any of us feel like doing, it's hard to beat the convenience. My sister, in her brick-and-mortar enclave in NM, is vehemently anti-Amazon. I can't blame her and understand why, it's just one of those necessary evils for us that frees us up to do other things.

I'll let my kid know about microcenter (although he probably already does). He's looking to build his own gaming PC plus wants to do his own programming and development.

They have motherboard/processor packages that are usually priced very well (essentially the motherboards are free with the processor at a decent price) I've done a few like that. Building a PC is a lot of fun and pretty straightforward if you do your homework! If he has any questions, usually it's been asked and answered on tomshardware (all things diy computing forum) and if you want to shoot me any questions id be happy to help too.

Don't be. Things change. At one point, the horse was important and the blacksmith was king. Today, you'd be hard pressed to find one. Guy who bought a car should be embarrassed driving it past the dying out blacksmith. Paradigm changes.

I used to build my own till I went to laptops but now it is hard to justify buying a tower over a laptop.

That hits the minimum wage issue right smack in the face. Pay someone $10.10/hr they will make at most 20k/yr. Then on the other hand let the employer and employee negotiate the terms, then the worker has a actual chance at of improving without the Gmans help.
