Bird poop problems? Try this 'scare-sparrow'

'Scare-sparrow' is my coined phrase. If a scare-crow scares off crows, well . . .

One of my clients lives on a lot in Woodside with many large oak trees. He has a MB S550, nice car, maybe an '09. He was having a problem the last couple of months with a small bird, a sparrow or a starling maybe, roosting on the driver side mirror and pooping all over it. If he parked in the parking strip out front instead of behind his gate, no improvement. This bird had marked its territory. Then he heard about these things:

No more poop, in fact, he said he hadn't seen or heard any birds or squirrels since he started putting it on top of his car! The car pic was taken at night, not the best. He had it on the porch today, I think the bird in question has been scared off good and proper.

THe head on this thing is mounted on a really sensitive ball bearing. Light breezes will make the head move. Spins and goes up and down. About $30 IIRC.

Wonder if it would keep the dump ducks from crapping on boats while at the mooring? Might be worth a shot.

Does it work with pigeons? I've tried a lot of things to get rid of the pigeons on one of my rental properties with no success.

"Obviously, this did not work after three weeks and I found pigeon poop upon the head and wings of the plastic, indicating that the pigeons returned. Most birds at first glance are frightened by it but after a few days, they instinctively know that it isnt really alive, even the moving head, which is operated by a spring, doesn't mimic actual live owl's heads, since most owls don't even have a neck bone structure. After a few more months, even the head fell off and there was a woodpecker nest inside the hole. After a few years, the whole thing just fell to pieces."

Cardinals are notorious for pecking car mirrors. Both side mirrors of my 124 are really scratched from this. For a year or so I had to cover my mirrors with plastic grocery bags. Nothing else I did helped, but I didn't think of the owl thing. I would not have believed that bird pecks could scratch glass as bad as it is, but it is pretty bad. They must have grit on their beaks.

Howdy All,
Had them at work to scare pigeons out of the hangers. Eventually the pigeons got used to the owls which ended up with as much bird poop on them as the planes. A real live hawk started hanging around and the pigeon population went down considerably.
