A Cautionary Tale Of Social Media

Comedy is hard.

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/02/15/magazine/how-one-stupid-tweet-ruined-justine-saccos-life.html?_r=0

When I first met her, she was desperate to tell the tens of thousands of people who tore her apart how they had wronged her and to repair what remained of her public persona. But perhaps she had now come to understand that her shaming wasn’t really about her at all.

Holy shnikeys! It sure is a fine line.

Some board members of one of the trade groups I currently head want to enter the social media realm. Some of them want to jump right into it and start posting away. This is a very timely, cautionary tale as to why you need to have a strict policy in place and controls over who is putting that information out.

As far as my own business goes, while barely adequate, I do have a Twitter account that only I have access to as a bit of a place holder. I also have a personal account. For the very reasons mentioned in the article, I rarely if ever make comments on either account outside of reTweeting a link to an article, study or blog post. It eliminates the possibility of some off the cuff remark being taken the wrong way.

“Going to Africa. Hope I don’t get AIDS. Just kidding. I’m white!”

Kinda hard to take the wrong way or is there another way to take that comment? Granted in this PC world you probably shouldn't say that to anyone but she did.

Communication technology advances faster than the human ability to both understand the message, context and effect of the communication.

I suppose she could have one it the old way by placing an ad on the Front Page of the local paper. Or how about the really old way and stand in the middle of the square and yell it out?

She explained herself in the article, whether or not anyone wants to believe her is up to them. Posted words are emotionless so you (generic) definitely leave yourself open for misinterpretation.

Stupid thing to say regardless, but I tend to believe that wasn't her intent. Of course, she was in Public Relations (and should have known better)...

The author's take on public shaming is an interesting angle that I hadn't really thought of.

Yes but one needs to face the reality, distasteful as it might be. Me, I would not give a crap unless that is their repertoire of jokes. One joke won't make the difference even if it is against my type of people, whatever that type is.

If she is a pr expert as purported she is also a complete idiot. No way in hell would I hire her as any sort of vendor or agent of ours. My company's social media presence is pretty significant and is a major source of traffic and marketing spend since our audience is very savvy. If any of our agencies did anything like that we would likely dump them immediately with very few questions. Luckily for her it doesn't sound like she damaged her clients and only her own reputation but it would raise a lot of leadership and strategic questions.

Swamp sounds like you guys have a good approach. Honestly Twitter isn't everything and id definitely caution certain industries jumping to dump money into some social media. A lot of times it doesn't make sense.
