Costco Drops American Express

Costco to ditch AmEx cards at U.S. stores next year | Reuters

Likely replacement is Capital One and MasterCard, which took AMEX's spot in Canada.

As a side note . . . the average income of a Costco member? Just south of $100K per year and those folks renew at about 91% per year.

I like Costco, just wish there was one closer. Do go to Sam's quite a bit just because they're more convenient.

I've got a Cap One card and Amex so it won't make a difference to me. We'll figure out a way to spend too much.

So you carry in a bushel of apples, and get 96 rolls of TP and three pounds of apples.

I wish Costco took visa like everyone else, maybe they will switch to Discover?

Many years ago a guy i know was going to open an auto repair shop. Nothing fancy, just an import shop.

AMEX, at the time, offered him a plan where if he wanted his money in one month they kept 50% of the amount. If he wanted it in six months they charged him zero.

So he just went with the credit cards his bank set him up with and finally started taking AMEX when he could afford to carry them for six months.

I guess COSCO was tired of not having quicker access to their money?

Milwaukee and Madison have 2 stores apiece. For me to shop costco, I'd have to load up the wagon, so to speak. Granted their selection is good quality, it is hardly worth it for me to drive an hour to get a few groceries. This just became a 4 hour trip so I have to plan something around that area and definitely shop a huge lot to make it worth the while. My contact lenses were worth it just that it stinks having to make a trip to get it, test it, test it, finalize it and pick it up.

As long as they still take cash, WGAS? Amex can either up their game or stop playing.

Amex merchant fees are the highest out there. It's a wonder to me ANYBODY takes their card.

Hmm. I use my VISA debit card at Costco all the time. Regional difference?

Costco and American Express have decided not to renew their US partnership after the current co-branded credit card agreement expires in March of 2016.
Costco will continue to accept all American Express cards at our warehouses and on costco.com until April 1, 2016, and the Costco / AMEX TrueEarnings cards or Platinum Cash Rebate cards will still function the same as they always have.
Cardholders will continue to earn their cash rebates. They will receive their rebate checks in their February 2015 and February 2016 AMEX statements as normal. Those checks can be redeemed at any Costco warehouse in the US for cash or merchandise.
The co-branded credit cards will continue to serve as membership cards until April 1,2016. Members do not need to make any changes to their accounts or take any action at this time.
This announcement does not impact Costco membership in any way.
Costco is in the process of developing a replacement credit card program that will be available in April of 2016. We will be communicating with every Costco / AMEX co-branded cardholder well in advance of any changes, and cardholders will have ample time to prepare for the pending changes.

Costco has the least expensive lamb roasts around here. I stock up and cut them in half for our use quite frequently. They appear to be the same brand of lamb as is sold in all the other grocery stores around here. They take Visa debit here but not Visa credit.

Must be a local thing. They don't have lamb here. Brand doesn't mean as much to me as the taste. Same brand but lower quality is still lower quality in my book. The wife OTOH just slaps the word "same" and not look twice. To her a hot dog is a hot dog.

In my case my debit card doesn't give me points so it won't help. I don't intend to use cash or even carry the stuff.
