Never trust students with the simplest of tasks

Instructed 4-5 students to carefully load junk wood into the back of my truck since they couldn't stay focused on doing any other task I have them. Told them to lay it in the bed, not throw or toss and be mindful of the glass

Not 10 minutes later I see this. Inthe back of my head I knew I should not have had them do this because they all screw around too much. Hopefully the school covers it because a student did it. They already cover vandalism to teacher cars.....

New job can't come soon enough

Look on the bright side, now you can replace the glass with one that has a sliding window instead!
I destroyed a rear window in a comanche i had with a massive spool that rolled forward and smashed out the glass completely. By the time it was fixed and i had opted for the openable rear window, i was glad it had happened

Why do you have students doing what sounds like non-school related tasks for you?

I do not know the details but if my kid came home to me and told me he was loading debris into his/her teachers truck I am pretty sure I'd be having a talk with your principle.

So what gives?

He's a shop teacher. It's junk wood from the shop.

I would think materials cleanup might be a fairly important part of a shop curriculum.

Into a personal truck? I would think there would be a dumpster being used.

Good wood goes into the back of a truck so you can burn it, its a waste of tipping fees in a dumpster.

Also its not such a big deal, happens pretty often. Replace it with a sliding glass window.

and this is why kids these days are lazy. No one makes them work . I can apply my standards to this activity anyways "students will work effectively in a team to achieve an end goal." Goal is to clean up our mess truck is the tool to help achieve goal, students work as a team to clean up. Or I even have a standard for them on keeping their work area clean. So, they are learning, I have standards for it. Last week my students asked me to get more pallets to break down and make boxes.these kids want to build and create but aren't allowed to in other classes or even at home. I even had one of my 7th period trouble makers leading a group assembling the boxes from the sides other students made.

It may not be teaching math or language arts but I teach these kids valuable skills they can actually use in the real world to get a job.

We are building planter boxes from reclaimed pallet wood so broken slats and the nail infested 2x4's we do t use get burned or tossed in a giant dumpster we have on the other side of the school. I don't have a trailer so I use my truck bed, because truck? I had my first period help me load up with no issue. The students actually asked me to bring my truck so we could clean up our mess so I did. Another class I asked a handful of students to do the same since they didn't want to build boxes or take apart pallets so I figured they could help load up the scraps because it was an incredibly simple task for them to do.

It really isn't that big of a deal. I wasn't terribly pissed off just like "aww man, now I have to clean up glass and probably pay for the glass myself if the school insurance doesn't cover it". I told the students "junk happens" one went on to say " you mean s*^t happens, right?" Which I replied, "yes, correct but let's use a different word, school setting"

I had them check the tapes to make sure no one did throw the wood or horseplay. If they did then I'd be a bit more mad but whatever.....I'll just load it all up next time myself

If I were the principal then during that talk I'd be asking you why your worthless sack of **** kids were such ****ups in class they could only be used for trash cleanup, and even screwed that up.

Of course I'm sure I wouldnt remain a principal for long, but at least for once something that needed to be said would have been.

I have a sliding window but never use it. When I locked myself out I checked but had it latched inside.

I am not surprised, go after the teacher. Show up with a lawyer to boot. My father would have said that I had better figure out how I was going to pay for it.

Definitely a lot more useful for a single cab, but i do enjoy the breeze that comes in the back window during summer
