Packages ride on a conveyor system many times getting tumbled and dropped. It just isn't possible to gently carry the package from place to place and expect the low rates we get these days.

The failures I've had when receiving packages have always been from the person that shipped it.

Seller packaged a crankshaft in box stuffed with news paper. Box arrived broken because the news paper crushed and crank bounced around in the box until box came apart. Somehow another box belonging to someone else broke too and a 1/2" drive breaker bar ended up arriving with my crank. With the next crank ( from different sellers ) I told them to wrap it up in 3 layers of cardboard like a rug and tape around. This arrived just fine as the 3 layers provided enough cushion without crushing out.

I had a differential center section shipped cross country a while back, it was packed in a box with news paper. Just like above it beat the paper and box apart.

These packing failures are not the fault of the shipping company as the box broke from the inside out.

I've had other items shipped properly packed without issue.

Are you one of us too? :D

Only by default, and I sure don't know WTH I'm talking about! :)

One of my prior job descriptions was Logistics & Inventory Control Manager so I handled all the shipping, receiving and claims. I know just enough to be dangerous! :D

Insidious-Burst strength is a measurement of basically puncture strength. As for the crush rating, this a simplification but basically put a flat even load on top of the box to 200# isn't terribly uncommon. Try it at home with a new box and a piece of plywood. We usually spec by board weight and size, and extrapolate out to the strength we need. Prevents suppliers from going cheap on you and switching to something that's "technically rated" but isn't practically rated(think of a HF trailer that's rated at 2000#)

Can't Know-It's a PITA, but if you really want it delivered safe and sound strap it to a pallet. When I've sent expensive delicate test equipment it goes pallet->3" foam->eqpt->ratchet straps->4 wall corrugated "crate" screwed to the pallet. Just make sure your crate outer can take compression-if it can be stacked, it will be stacked.

Swampy-Private carriers can do that. They charge a premium, but if it's irreplaceable that's the way to go.

The only cardboard box that survives UPS handling is a crate made with 2x8 boards :D

Most UPS guys here are Teamsters...ever wonder why the Horse is the symbol of the Teamsters?
It is the only creature that god created that can sleep while standing up...and get paid for it!
