revelation -- some cars aren't Diesels

I've been driving the SD almost exclusively for the past couple of months. For the heck of it, I drove the SE today. I sat in the SE for a while waiting for the ABS light to go off before starting it. New habits die hard too.

Wow...driving a diesel would be a new experience for me. Especially living with a redline that's well below any other car that I've driven. I must say, I'm curious about their torque characteristics though. Does a 300SD (W126 or W116) pull pretty well when one stomps on it at 55 mph for a passing move? I've been wondering about that.

If your idea of Diesels is based on a 240D, an SD will surprise you above 55mph. My SD surprises me above 85mph. Passing hasn't been an issue but I don't have much opportunity. Your 380SE, modified exhaust and all, will be hard pressed to keep up with an SDL.

True, there is no red area in the 6000rpm tach of my 81 SD. Not sure about the SDL. I've run my SD in 2nd and 3rd gear with the pedal floored and it won't go past 4800rpm.

Yeah, I am liking the idea of the 300SDL...with the six-cylinder engine and the "second series" W126 body. I think there may just be one in my future, but the 380SE suits me quite nicely right now. Weren't the 300SDLs supposed to have a higher top speed than any gasoline-powered American sedan upon their launch in '86? I seem to remember that from an old article on cars.com.

I know my SDL tops out at about 115. It does have alot of get up and go at 55 but once you get to about 100 and stop on it, not much will happen, its a slow climb to 115.

A 420SEL and definately a 560SEL will bury the 300SDL in just about anything (except fuel economy).

The 420SEL will do about 120 or 125 (I know mine would ) and im pretty damn sure the 560SEL will do 140 or 150 and the Euro 560SEL's would bury the speed at 160+ mph. I've always wanted one of those

BTW: I just remembered, If you are really curious, I made a couple of moves of my car acclerating 0-60 and from 80 to 100..

This is in my 87 300SDL..
