Cord Cutting Economics

Sony announced their new streaming service "Vue" for Playstation. $50 per month, $600 per year PLUS your relatively fast home internet service bill.

Sony has created the Cadillac of pay TV. Would you pay $600 a year for it?

The article notes that the average expanded basic cable bundle is $65 per month and doesn't need internet.

Cord cutters, what are you saving these days?

Well, when we cut the cord, we left it cut, so to speak. When we moved in 2010, I called and canceled the cable. They asked about having it turned on at the new place, I replied that we hadn't decided what we were going to do yet, which was true. The first week we spent getting everything into place. The next few were spent unpacking/putting away. And then the weeks became months, and we found we just didn't miss TV enough to feel like paying for it. So we don't. We have DVD's to watch if/when we want to.

I use a Roku box.

Do you have any paid subscriptions on the Roku? Hulu, HBO Go, Netflix, Amazon, etc?

works for me

I don't watch much TV, so I have an antenna. Like 1970s style, baby! Gets me PBS and a bunch of foreign channels. I also have Netflix and a bittorrent client. Why would I pay $50/mo for something I can get for under $10?

Hatterasguy 03-18-2015 07:31 PM

I pay $140 a month for TV, cable, and a phone I don't use but it comes with the package.

If I dropped it to just cable it would be a bit over $50 for high speed internet.

Throw in Hulu, HBO, Netflix, and Crunchyroll and your in for another $40 or so a month.

I'm debating canceling TV, probably will this summer.

Anything the above services don't have I can just buy on Amazon or Itunes.

Maybe that's why they announced my 2 year-old Sony media-player will no longer support YouTube after April 20.
Replacing it with a Roku. Hope it doesn't also become 'unsupported' in two years!

Happy Motoring, Mark
