2015 Toyota Yaris Front End is UGLY

Holy cow.

What happened?

It looks like they failed at trying to be Audi.

tjts1 03-21-2015 02:27 PM

Its built in France, that's what happened.

Mölyapina 03-21-2015 02:30 PM

France? I thought that they'd have higher labor costs...

That grille is gonna be horrible for aero, too...

spdrun 03-21-2015 02:54 PM

The front end is for pedestrian safety, I think -- provides more room to crush before hitting the motor. I have a soft spot for "ugly" French cars:

For car manufacturing Germany and France have lower labor costs per hour than the US because healthcare and retirement are handled by the government. The reason you don't see more cheap cars imported from Europe is shipping cost and exchange rate risk. I suspect you'll see that change now that they are devalueing the Euro and aligning car regulations between the EU and US in a couple of years.

Oh, that's interesting.

On the regs, what are they aligning? Emissions? Safety? Both? Will we finally be able to import diesels over here?

"Disowned by my father for being ugly."

I think it looks like a mustachioed man yelling honestly

might be a reason to buy

DieselPaul 03-22-2015 10:49 AM

I hate to break it to you j-man, the '14 was ugly too. So was the 13', and the '12, and Echo.

tbomachines 03-22-2015 11:29 AM

I don't get the fascination with the styling "beak" led by the brand logo. Acura did it as well (to quite a lot of criticism, and they've since dropped it). I think the part I don't like about it is the black plastic bumper that is integrated into the "grille". I am rather disappointed to see the Lexus predator grille reach its way to Toyota models.

Better the mustachioed man be yelling honestly than shouting lies!

Hatterasguy 03-22-2015 04:19 PM

A lot of new cars are ugly.

KarTek 03-22-2015 05:00 PM

The gaping, wide open mouth look seems to have been popular for the last few years across quite a few brands.

It looks like a French Bulldog after sucking on a lemon...

E150GT 03-22-2015 05:10 PM

the yaris just plain sucks anyway. My GF has a 2012. I hate that car.

panZZer 03-22-2015 06:38 PM

At least they were modestly ugly. This one is obnoxiously ugly.

I think its an improvement over the echo, personally, which reminds me of the love child of a turtle, a snail, and a parking kiosk from a design standpoint.

You seem to have the typically British gift for understatement. I noticed about 20 years ago that manufacturers were in a race to see who could design the ugliest car. They outdid each other yearly. I think that race has finally passed, but we are in a new age of ugly.

Some consolation:

1. When you're driving it, you don't see the exterior.

2. Power and fuel economy are coexisting to and extent never seen before.

3. As bad as that Toyota is, there are worse. The worst car I ever had to drive was a Dodge Caliber with the CVT. It was worse than my parents' K-Car. I've driven a Prius and it was better than either (but I'm still not buying one). Good cars are still out there, but they are the exception rather than the rule. Alfa 4C and current versions of the Lotus 7 come to mind. Scion FR-S, Mazda MX-5, and Porsche 911 are there as well. I wish I had the coin to try out the Ferrari 488, but I'll let others do that for me.

4. Forgo 4 wheels. Ninja 300. CBR500R. Ninja 650, Street Triple, Daytona 675R, R6, GSXR-600, CBR600RR, ZX-6R, GSXR-750, Speed Triple, Ninja 1000, ZX-10R, R1, GSXR-1000, CBR1000RR, S1000RR, and many more.

Anyone who buys a Yaris based on looks is kidding themselves.

The Audi grills are ugly too and all of the cars with the wide mouth grill are ugly too. Sorry.

Jag makes some decent looking cars still, all the new Mercedes are ugly. I don't like their new fish styling.

I'd still take a new one, I'd just lease it though and not be as interested in washing and waxing it as I was with my W126.

The new WRC Yaris built by Toyota TMG (German TRD) looks half descent.

Good thing they went with the name yaris instead of their first choice of "joseph stalin" in this case

That is true.

What's funny is that we first saw the Yaris in Finland, and the script of the "Yaris" logo read such that my mother thought that is read "Varis", which is the Finnish word for "crow".

I'm not sure which I would rather buy, the Toyota Stalin or the Toyota Crow.

My next road Urchin MUST HAVE those square rear flares and--- god what a stunning whing thingee!!!

Mark DiSilvestro 03-25-2015 07:45 AM

'Ugly' is the new 'pretty', or 'Better ugly than boring' must be the mantra at today's automotive styling schools. Hideousness for the masses is more like it.
And people used to gripe about Mercedes Fintails. I think tailfins would only improve the looks of many of these new cars.
I now regard my 240D as a pinnacle of modern automotive design!
Can't think of any 'popular' new car that I really like the look of.

Most absurd recent car styles I've seen are the Nissan 'Juke' (Joke?) and the similarly ridiculous-looking little 2-door Hyundai sports-thing called a 'Veloster'. And the 'Smart' car? 'Clown' car is more like it!
I'd rather see an old K-car!
So tired of the current rage for cramped, organic-blob styling, with lizard-grin or fish-faces, and squashed roof-lines, massive pillars and tiny, weird windows that now require video cameras to see out of. UGLY, UGLY, UGLY!

Happy Motoring, Mark

tbomachines 03-25-2015 08:45 AM

Everyone thought the e60 was hideous when it first came out but over time it has aged remarkably well.

Also, I like the juke styling. It is different and doesn't really take itself seriously. It is an "okay I get it" kind of ugly, not Yaris "I need to be aggressive" on a tiny car ugly.

It's the chassis for the 2004-2010 BMW 5 series. Its akin to talking about the w126 in reference to the 79-91 Mercedes S-class sedans.
