dress codes for girls and boys.

Gay Louisiana high school student not allowed to wear tuxedo to prom | Fox News

I get the fact that there are rules and they were in place so the girl really has no claim against the school, at least in this case.

My issue with with the expectations that are placed on boys and girls growing up. I am guessing that this school if not others allow girls to wear shorts or pants the rest of the year so why the different rules at prom? Times have changed and will continue to change. The expectation that girls and boys play with certain toys and dress certain ways seems to be out dated and goes to enforcing certain antiquated stereo types. Why cant girls play with toy trucks and boys play with dolls if that is what they like? Women do not have to wear dresses. They wear pants and shorts all the time. Why the restriction at a prom?

I understand a dress code for a formal event. No problem with that. But why not just say that only gowns and tux's and suits are allowed. Leave it up to the individual to what they want to wear? Will some people take advantage of it? Probably. Deal with that on a case by case basis.

I think the policy reinforces an antiquated ideal and I am not comfortable with it.

I'm embarrassed to admit that I didn't wear a tux to a couple formal dances. Best I could muster at the time was a.......

........ leisure suit.

Good gawd I'm feeling old. And at least slightly less than stylish.

To the original post's question: Let 'em wear whatever they want to wear.
