Advantages/disadvantages of Facebook?

Just curious to hear from those here who are on Facebook... what do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of Facebook? I've been debating getting on, since I have a couple friends from this past semester whom I would like to stay in touch with but who won't be around campus anymore, and it seems like Facebook would be the easiest way to do this. Do you find Facebook helps with staying in touch with people? What other thoughts do you have on it? Should I get on it?

I started FB in 2011, after several years of pressure. It opens up opportunities to join the global community.
I have found it useful as a source of news too.
I graduated in 1988, and other than a few friends that i have stayed in contact with, i have not seen most in over 20 years. Facebook has reconnected me to many of them.

Biggest drawback... If you do facebook, it will take more of your time than you will care for.

If you are prone to stalking ex girlfriends or have a passion for duck face selfies, id say it can only make those habits worse.

Otherwise its nice to stay in touch.

Arent you about to head to college? Facebook is the best little black book ever, set up an account for the women networking schemes.

How much time would you say you spend per day or per week?

I had never heard of a duck face selfie before, but just Googled it now. To borrow a phrase of yours, it was definitely a case of regrettable enlightenment.

Actually, I just finished my first year, and there are some people from last semester I'd like to stay in touch with, hence my interest in Facebook.

I continue to question the value of this forum as any sort of moral compass.

Wow one year already! How time flies

Facebook and checking for duckfaces is a valuable tool in weeding out candidates when shopping for a GF, so i am totally for having it for that reason alone during college years.

It used to be an excellent initial tool for judging the caliber of a woman was if you open their door for them and they lean over and unlock your door for you as you walk around the car, it was a good sign.

It still is, but now another useful tool is checking their facebook for percentage of duckfaces and selfies in general. Too many or too serious you are in trouble. If their facebook is pictures of them smiling with friends and family, good sign. If its 900 selfies and motivational quotes daily, dont move in yet

I no longer watch TV. The time i used to spend watching TV, has been replaced with facebooking, and a game I play on facebook.

Advantages/disadvantages of Facebook?

Facebook is okay, I catch up with old friends on it from time to time. Our 10 year reunion was all done through Facebook, etc. Facebook is always developing their marketing and data mining capabilities which is a double edged sword. LinkedIn continues to be very valuable for me professionally but wasn't of much use until after college.

I spend maybe 30 mins total on Facebook each day but a lot of times it is just a quick check to see what's going on, rather mindless. I do follow bands I like on there and sometimes they have great deals and tour announcements and stuff on FB whereas elsewhere im not sure I would have heard about.

Advantages/disadvantages of Facebook?

I just moved back to my hometown at 30. Ive had facebook a long time, but finally let high school people add me.

One great thing that came, I have a small vineyard here and noticed an old friend makes wine. We are still in barrel but have a small winery in the mix.

In regard to morals and women, it can be useful. You can really speed things up in learning what they are doing.

Ran into a women and asked her out. She added me, has a good little business going on, seems sweet and nice, and lists herself as a christian.

But every picture, she has a glass of wine in her hand. Every damn one.

You can also spot instability quickly. Inconsistent posts. Etc.

However, people dont present them true selves. They present what they want to be. Kinda ok at my age. But a fine line there.

I feel its taken a turn recently. Lots of bat **** crazy going on and they are all getting on.

I feel everyone is moving to instagram.

Beware of people that post useless links and take all the quizes. Lack of self identity. Again, bsc.

And beware what you post. Employers will dig deep into your account. Don't do anything public.

FB is what you make of it, neither good nor bad. If anything, you get to experience the wide range of human personalities and it is quite the learning tool.

Apart from the fact that Facebook does, with your consent, what the NSA does without your consent, it's useful. You can keep up with friends and family who are distant. In my case, since my current self has diverged significantly from my former self, Facebook friends who knew my former self, provide a mirror for what I might have become. It's an interesting experience which I probably would not have had apart from Facebook since our paths likely would not have crossed otherwise.

Oh no i didn't mean that.

I just prefer not to be around people that drink all the time. Deeming it necessary for every social engagement.

And if its that common at 30, I know where it may head long term...

Edit: you would have to see what I'm talking about. Too lengthy to explain where the line is.

I'be noticed that one. But I felt like I'm too old for that. Plus most my good friends don't have social media.
