Mmmmmmm... ///M.

Definitely a different experience than the MB/AMGs, one that I'm not sure I like... Not a bad car by any means, just one with a really confusing identity.

Expound? This is one of my dream cars, I'm curious what you think of it.

I had an e39 540/6 with some dinan upgrades. Unbelievable car, I wish I still had it. Actually not, repairs where terribly expensive despite the fact I did all the work myself. It was like a thousand dollars every time the car needed something.

M62s do that. I have an E38 740i.

E39 M5s have been on my radar for a while, always have something else in the garage when a reasonably priced one comes up.

Let us know how you like it!

I have an M3 with a decent amount of mods right now, and while it doesn't have the torque of AMGs, its a different kind of fun. The M3 rev's a lot more and makes a lot more noise, albeit not going nearly as fast.

Not a fan of the e90s but I would take an e46 in a heartbeat. They're getting pretty cheap too...smg and vanos fixes are fairly straightforward can pick them up cheap.

Seen a few under $10,000 as of late, which is funny because E36s are starting to turn upwards, the E46 is a lot more car but the value curves are beginning to cross.

I'm still a Mercedes guy, but I've had 5 or 6 BMWs and I have liked all of them.

In the year and some that I had my 135, It was in the shop 4-5 times totaling about 4 weeks. Dumped it when the warranty period was almost over and lost my shirt on it. Fantastic car to drive but $$$ and lots of annoyance bringing it into the dealer every couple months. I think the e46 is about as new as I'd want to go with bmw.

Just feels confused as a car to me.

The biggest two gripes I have with the car are the clutch and the sterring box. The clutch is overly stiff for being a sedan - it's something I would expect from a 911, but not something that I expected in a 4 door, long range cruiser. It's about on par with an uprated clutch a friend has on his STI that can hold 2-3x the power of the stock clutch. The steering box on the other hand feels numb. It doesn't quite have the same feedback you get from an M3, nor does it have the nice weight/placement of the M3. When you put the sorta bland steering with the super heavy clutch (and that V8 that revs super high), you get a car that doesn't quite know if it's a sports car or a long distance cruiser.

One other thing worth mentioning is the drive by wire system - there's a very subtle delay that you will notice from when you pin the throttle to the ITBs opening up. Irritates the heck out of me, especially when I'm down shifting, and am used to immediate response.

I'm sure I'll be flamed for my thoughts on this, but now I can see why MB/AMG really offered a manual. Just doesn't really "work" unfortunately.

I'm thinking an E46 M3 might actually be the replacement for the Miata when I get tired of it. After piloting the M5 for a good bit, I can honestly say mid-size sedans just work better with an autotragic. Manuals just don't really work all that well - on the one hand it makes the car feel more sporty, but unless as a whole the car is setup to be a "sports car", it just doesn't work.

Automatics work better in cars with torque, which no AMG has a shortage of. The AMG variant of the 722.6 does everything it should do, shifts quickly, and the Speedshift cars hold gears when they should. I laugh at the BMW guys that claim the autos slow down and/or ruin AMGs.

Your thoughts on the M5 are interesting, I'll have to drive one before I buy one haha. It is a car that has long been on my "to get" list, and the M3 made me want one even more.

Apparently, the folks at AMG listened to the slow shift complaints. The new GT reportedly shifts quicker and that has even found it's way down the line to the 2016 C450 AMG Sport 4-Matic.
