So when are we going to go metric?

Why Americans still use Fahrenheit long after everyone else switched to Celsius - Vox

I use the metric measurement for my job and so does my wife. It took all of a few minutes to figure out. The whole system is based on 10. how hard is it to figure out that 10mm is 1 cm, 10cm is 1 m, 10m is 1 decameter..... A temp of 0 is freezing and 100 is boiling. with speed, 1 kph is 1,000 m per hour. Anyone know how many ft per sec 60 mph is without looking it up? I'm guessing very few.

I think the biggest concern in the article is the issue with drugs. Hospitals all use the metric system when dispensing drugs. How many people have been injured or killed because of our stubbornness in not adopting the world wide standard of measurements?

After getting into Mercedes, I have to (grudgingly) admit I like working with the metric system better. I'm all for a changeover, but I don't have a good feel for distance and especially temperature. Speed is no big deal because you just make the pointy thing in the dash match the sign by the road

In my Euro SL with metric gauges, it is somewhat of a pain to remember the rough conversion to speed.

Thing is if we convert you wont have to try to convert. The sign on the freeway will say 100kph and all you have to do is align the little needle on the speedo with the 100 and your good to go. When I drove in Europe it was no big deal. Never even thought twice about it.

Think of all the tools you'll be able to buy cheap.

BTW how come the drive sizes for all the sockets are 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 instead of 5mm 10mm and 15mm?

The SAE sized wrenches became the defacto standard, but would be the Snap-On truck guy's fantasy dream if that were to change.

Were hanging with Chad!! Bush likes it.

I used to work for a German firm. Auto parts supplier. I was trained on a machine, all metric. All of it is sort of a comparison. Same as stated before about driving. I once had to set up an 'INCH' part on the machine. I was lost. Basically, to us, its a comparison to time or $$. I don't really care how far A is to B in miles or Kms. I care how many hours it will take, then how much the gas or diesel will cost.

Lincoln Chaffe seems to think that boosting the metric system will help him get to the WH. Metric is smarter but we'all is stuck in our ways. Me included.

I didn't really like the metric system until I went to college. Engineering calculations are vastly simpler using SI. Now I'm a big fan.

Due to manufacturing, the cost of new machines, new speed limit signs, older cars on the road, etc., I don't see the US changing anytime soon. In manufacturing, everything is converted over during machining, unless you have access to metric cutting tools and a CNC. The sheer cost alone to change that is astronomical.

I think it could be done. Not sure about the cost. As thr article pointed out, lots of manufactures need to make two of the same item. One for the US and one for the rest of the world. Most cars have a speedo with both MPH and KPH. As for the signs. Don't need to make new ones. I have seed signs that just have a overlay on the number they want to change. With a 60MPH sign just make a "L" over lay with "10" and KPH under it. Clean the sign, slap it on.

I think given the confusion of the measuring system that metric would catch on very quickly.

I want the contract to change all of the Interstate 'mile' markers, exit numbers and all of the maps that reference these markers.

Of course, we would all have to relearn our favorite exit numbers...
