Motorcycle Riders: touring on a sport bike?

Bit random... Any motorcycle riders have experience doing long distance trips on sport bikes? I'm supposed to go to SoCal in September, but am thinking about kitting out my 848 with tons of storage and making the trip on that...

Thoughts? It's a 6-8 hour journey via 4 wheels.

It's about 500 miles -- not really a big deal on any bike. But take a few days to do it. Might as well see something along the way, not just the concrete of Rt. 5.

I'm thinking of riding an SV650 cross country this summer for what it's worth.

Tons of storage? What are you, a girl?

If you can vary your departure day, do it then wait for clear weather and take the PCH. Pick it up in Daly City off 280 and enjoy. It will be ALL DAY LONG, but you will enjoy nearly every minute of it. (In a car that route sucks badly, but being able to BLAST around pokey cars and motor homes is a pure joy.)

As a fellow Duck owner, I have to ask, though, how long have you ridden your 848 in a single stretch? I don't know who coined the phrase "Ducati - the best half-hour bike there is" but with my older body I find a decent amount of truth in that. That said, you'll be moving around enough if you take Hwy 1 that it will help, but I surely wouldn't take my ST2 down south on 101, much less 5. Gaaa, I'd rather stab myself in the eye with a pencil.

Rent a S550 with a trailer hitch, and tow that bad boy to SoCal.

go for it. Rode a CBR 954RR 1200 miles to Sturgis one year, no damage done. pack light, as you should anyway.

Sounds crazy. But what do I know? I just got back from a 2300+ mile, 6 state, 8 day trip on a DR650...

Let me now when you're going, I can help you plot some routes through the Sierras.

On my Katana 750 -

1) SS1000

2) Get out of the .mil road trip.Ohio-> PA-> SC-> TN-> AR-> NM-> CA-> CO-> MN-> home in Ohio all in 30 days. Longest day was 800mi.

Dont regret either trip, but nowadays, I'd grab a more touring-y bike to do it.

Start with a good sized gel seat pad and bicycle shorts. Practice holding your body up with your abdomen and getting weight off of your hands (this is, imho, the key to doing distance on a sport bike...not that a Katana is really a sport bike...). Like most things in life, practice helps greatly.

I need to pack a weekends-worth of camping gear, clothing, and food/drink - so damn right I need tons of storage! I'd love to take PCH down, but that would put me on the wrong side of LA. I'm heading towards the San Bernadino Mountains - so I may do the backside of the Sierra.

Longest single stretch was Sacramento to San Jose. Wasn't bad, but wasn't the best ride in the world. Your ST2 would be a better bike for the trip though!

Don't do the backside of the Sierras, unless you're just looking to make great time and are willing to risk the tickets. There are a few good stretches, but there is a lot of straight and boring also.

When I get home tonight, I'll toss some ideas out there for you to look over. What type of roads do you prefer and/or prefer to avoid? On the trip we just did, the only Interstate we did was the stretch of the 15 that goes through the Virgin River Gorge. There are ways around, but then we'd have missed out on the Gorge.

You could but why? I have no issue with riding a sportbike across town or an hour or two away but 6 to 8 hr journey on that? I wouldn't punish myself like that. I'd definitely want a comfortable bike of some sort even if I have to beg, borrow or steal one. I set up my sportster after the wife decided to go with a Spyder to be more comfortable with better seats, handlebars and some mods to the motor. Wasn't going to take the swing in the shorts on that change. Her RS-S Spyder is more of a sportbike style where you lean forward more. An hour or maybe two is ok but I wouldn't ride it more than that unless I had to. Certainly not if I want to enjoy scenery. I want to be comfortable and not beat myself up

Is that like a scooter? IIRC the thing said was "Scooters and ..... are both fun to ride but you don't want your friends seeing you ride either."?

It was an MC. Underpowered, 8 hp, but snazzy-styling. I rode it to / from college in Upstate Nebraska. You haven't lived until running 50 mph with 65 mph two-lane highway traffic! Sparse traffic was the only margin of safety.
