Charlie Hustle Bet On Baseball as Player

ESPN says it obtained notebook documenting Rose 1986 bets

ESPN's "Outside the Lines" said it obtained a notebook seized by U.S. Postal Inspection Service in October 1989 from Rose associate Michael Bertolini, which reflect betting records from March to July 1986. The documents are under seal and stored in the National Archives' New York office, ESPN said.

I think this slams the door on any HOF change of heart by MLB. Pete should make as much money as he can on autographs and memorabilia.

He's paid enough. Let him in. Maybe an asterisk saying he is a lying, betting icon. He did what he did but still played harder than anybody else and accomplished much.

The rule is to keep players from throwing games. I don't think he ever threw one.

A cheat's a cheat. A crook's a crook. He's toast. Good riddance.
I didn't even remember Rose as playing into 1986, his last year. Guess the Mob bookies musta squeezed pretty hard for their dough. His word isn't worth the baseball it's written on, IMO.

But, otoh, baseball in 1986, some example...

In an effort to set an example, Commissioner Peter Ueberoth suspended seven players for drug abuse. All seven decided to contribute ten percent of their seasonal salary to drug abuse programs, serve one-hundred hours of community service and be subjected to random drug testing. The seven include Keith Hernandez of the New York Mets, Dale Berra of the New York Yankees, Joaquin Andujar of the Oakland Athletics, Jeffrey Leonard of the San Francisco Giants, Lonnie Smith of the Kansas City Royals, Enos Cabell of the Los Angeles Dodgers and Dave Parker of the Cincinnati Reds.

Bret Saberhagen sued Rawlings over a misrepresented endorsement deal. As many other players were being paid $50,000+ as part of their compensation, the Kansas City Royal pitcher was given two free gloves per season as his contract.

A free baseball promotion night at Arlington Stadium backfired as hundreds of fans targeted the Texas Rangers and umpires after the visiting Milwaukee Brewers rallied for a 10-2 win.

The Chicago Cubs were forced to fire their twenty-eight year old ball girl, Marla Collins, after she posed nude for Playboy. Despite fan support the young lady was terminated for "behavior unbecoming an employee" of the franchise.

Firing Marla is proof of their lack of judgment.

I was in the Army with Pete Roses brother. He was pretty much a low life scoundrel so his brothers slimy behavior never really surprised me.

As someone who lives and works in the Cincinnati area, I can only says this: I wish ALL of the current Reds bet on baseball, for the Reds to win, and I wish they bet big! That's pretty much what Pete did. Oh and his record won't have a footnote saying chemically enhanced performance, like some hall of famers. Pete was, is and probably forever will be a jerk. As I recall so were some other fellows in the HoF. how many of you have hit 4192?
