Turbodiesel roadtrip adventure

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Set out Monday from Denver heading to Little Current, Ontario in the North Channel of Lake Huron towing our 3500lb F-24 Trimaran on a trailer. First couple of days were uneventual apart fro a disappointing 10.5 mpg. Noticed yesterday that boost pressure was lower but hadn't put 2 and 2 together. We were pulling the steep hill out of the St. Croix river valley at the MN WI border this morning when boost pressure went from 4 psi to 15 of vacuum in a micro second and we dusted everyone behind us with a huge cloud of soot. Pulled into the Chevy dealer at the top of the hill who denied any knowledge of 6.5 diesels so went across the road to the Tractor Supply parking lot to dig into it. Turns out the turbo to manifold gasket had failed and it was sending exhaust into the engine compartment, with a stream aimed directly at the airbox which had been pulling in diesel soot. Air filter was completely clogged and sucked in towards the turbo. Luckily, Rice Lake Diesel did not deny knowledge of 6.5's and was willing to work on it. I was able to purchase a new air filter at the parts store next to Tractor Supply and some aluminum exhaust tape which I thought might deflect the exhaust away from the filter long enough for use to get to Rice Lake. They found the correct gasket buried in a toolbox and we sit in a hotel awaiting the completion of their work. I'm thinking that when the new engine was installed, no gasket was used as it was pretty much spewing exhaust on all sides. Hoping they don't run into any problems with the repair as the North Channel awaits

It's always something. The North Channel will be worth it, however!

Are you going over the top, or taking Hwy 10 to the Car Ferry, and taking it across? I recommend the ferry route. Its a great trip across the lake, and you get a break from driving. No problem with them handling your rig, I watched them pack in 14 semis and 200 some cars before.

The traverse City commerce site usually has a 20% coupon.

Going thru the UP. I would like to take the ferry sometime. Repair completed. Mechanic used a Dodge Cummins gasket since it's the same mount and GMC doesn't spec a gasket on theirs.

I've dealt with 6.5's in Humvees. The engine generally lasts longer than the truck in that application, but that isn't really saying much.

here's the rest of the story. Got up this morning and decided to check the repair work by starting it and putting my hand around the turbomanifold joint. Exhaust gas shooting out everywhere. Damn. Nice guy in the parking lot loaned me an inspection mirror and flashlight. I could see right thru the joint. Walked over to the diesel shop and he sent over the mechanic who did the work. He saw the problem,, puzzled over it a while and started disassembling it before the light went on. He had reassembled it the way he had found it---the way the guy who installed my engine had done it. One stud nut on the bottom and 3 stud nuts on top. What an idiot. all the stud nuts belonged on the bottom. That's the thing was leaking exhaust to begin with. He moved the three nuts to the bottom, tightened them and I was good to go. Damn, that engine mechanic was bad. Picked up 2mpg today though.

We used to go to rice lake every summer. Great place. Consider taking a small boat up the channel to the lift lock....seven locks in all I think. Old fashioned wooden lock gates operated by guys in Mountie suits walking in a circle on a capstan.

I had gloves and tools but when I saw the locations of the nuts on top, I realized I didn't have a wrench to access the front inner one. Of course I didn't even need to do that. I could had just added nuts from the bottom. But the guy who worked on it had a complex bent box wrench which he used on that inner top nut.
