Evoluton: Texting While Walking
Text-walkers evolve ‘protective shuffle' to prevent injuries - Telegraph
“Texting while walking significantly affects gait characteristics,” said lead author Sammy Licence of the University of Bath. “While one might infer that these alterations in gait might increase the risk for tripping, our analysis showed no significant difference. “Our results suggest that those who walk and text adopt a protective gait pattern alteration in order to minimize the risk of potential accidents.” The study further noted that they slow down and can't maintain a straight path while texting . . . which is why they must die! :D |
Just remember what happened to Danny Pink.

I wish more would text while walking. That makes them a better target than me. If I was going to mug someone, who would I pick? The person who is aware of their surroundings or the one whose eyes are on the phone? Inattentive Pedestrian = target.

Texting in the rain. There is a sad ballad in that somewhere.

Somebody doesn't know the difference between "evolution" and "adaptation"!
Whatever described is adaptation to an environmental pressure, it would take advantaging such behavior to an extent that results in any increase in the potential for survival and successful progeny to fit into the concept of biological "evolution". Plus the fact is there is not yet any way of assessing whether this adaptation results in a net evolutionary progression, evolution takes both time and generations to manifest. |
Thanks goodness O gave everyone in the US a phone:rolleyes:.

What puzzles me most in this vein...
Where do people usually text/tweet/facebook/email/other e-blather when they are pedestrians? * On the sidewalk, moving slowly, near the middle, perhaps so they won't walk into a newspaper machine or a light pole, but right where they impede the motion of most people trying to get somewhere at a normal pace. * On a stairwell, where they move slowly and jam traffic around them. * In a doorway, where they are then blocking people trying to get in or out of the room/business. * In the middle of a grocery aisle, so you can't get your cart around them. * Anyplace there is a line, and then when it's their turn they need to finish their moronity (yes, I know that's not a word, but it fits) before conducting their business, thus slowing down everyone. Generally speaking, such people should be beaten with sticks... Not that I have an opinion, of course. ;) |
"Texting would be a great invention . . . if they hadn't already invented the telephone." P. Poundstone

I rarely text. I don't have a lot to say
