And as I said, I DO find some of those fins tastefull, gracefull, even usefull. Having owned a couple Mercedes Fintails, I found the fins to be tastefull and very usefull, in that I could see them through the back window and they marked the rear corners if the car when I was backing up. I personally want to stay well within that dynamic. With their cars. When manufacturers go too far off the beaten path body design wise. More sales are probably lost with only a few new concepts catching on with mass appeal to the public. Semi retro designs have not seemed to sell well either. The few times manufacturers have tried that approach. Last edited by barry12345; 05-19-2018 at 01:37 PM. |

I'm surprised no one suggested the be-snouted Mercedes SLR for at least honorable-mention!

"However, the dual, stacked-grille styling gives the impression that one car has crashed atop another, and the hump-backed hood and lizard lights are pretty ugly."
I don't know why, but that particular description makes me chuckle every time. |

Didn't car writers start decrying the excesses of chrome and fins by the late 50s? Then, by the mid '70s, I remember one critic compared some Japanese new-car styling to those mythological Asian fishes & dragons.
It's time today for a similar backlash. My friend's new Civic reminds me of a giant insect! Happy Motoring, Mark

Well, they aren't getting any prettier.
Saw a new Toyota Yaris sedan yesterday (Mazda built by the way!) and the lizard lights and angry giant fish-mouth grill looks like the face on a 'Mr Yuck' sticker! Happy Motoring, Mark

When an XKE convertible is the standard of comparison, today's automotive styles are lacking.
