have you ever gotten power tools and appliances for cheap?
So we're moving to a house from an apartment and we'll have to get a few different things for around the place.
The budget will be strict and we may only be there one year anyway (we could end up in Australia, New Zealand, Europe, or anywhere in North America next year), but we need to get a lawn mower, washing machine, and then probably some power tools for building basic furniture (platform bed, nightstands, work table). Has anyone ever bought these on the cheap? How'd you do it and how'd it go?

I buy a few tools on Craigslist now and then. Has worked pretty well. Research the brand and try it out on site. I've declined on a couple of doggy looking items.
I've sold two washer/dryer sets for clients that worked out well. Didn't take long.

I bought a Wal*Mart 3/8 extension. It was cheap. You wanna? I will sell it to you even cheaper SINCE IT BROKE THE FIRST TIME WE USED IT. My mechanic needed it, I bought it because it was less than a mile away, it broke when he tried to remove a head bolt and almost skewered his wrist ON THE FIRST TURN. We had to drive 15 miles away to a Sears to get a decent one. Your call.
Lawn Mower and Washing Machine and Dryer. How do you plan to get it there? That could eat up all your savings. I'd go there and put a "wanted" ad in the paper a few weeks before I go. Tools you can buy here and send it there via surface mail which is cheaper and do the same for reverse. I guess it all depends on what you think your worth is. Do you mind the aggravation when it breaks on you and you need it to get something done, don't know where to go to get one, etc, etc? If you can put up with it, go for it.

I have a self propelled, Craftsman lawn mower you can have for free if you want to stop by and pick up, just let me know. Otherwise, look under craigslist "free" stuff listing.

Thanks Jim! ...I think we may be a little out of range up in the NE but otherwise I would totally take you up on it.
It sounds like craigslist is a good idea and I'll check it out. There won't be a rush to build any furniture so hopefully I can take my time looking for good buys. Someone also told me to just buy the washer from a used appliances store since they'll deliver and there will be a warranty. So I'm seriously considering that.

Just don't buy a second hand fridge. Made that mistake when we moved into an apartment years ago. Cockroach invasion...

When we moved out, we washed all the clothes in a laundromat, put them in garbage bags and sealed. Sprayed the box with roach killer, sealed it, sprayed the outside and put them in storage. Sent the microwave for warranty work and didn't take it back till we were done. On move day, put the boxes outside to let the roaches move out into the fields. Boarded the dogs every other weekend for 6 weeks, rented a room and used 3 times the roach bombs in the apartments as needed.

Don't know how big your lawn is but I bought a reel mower years ago and it was relatively inexpensive and has only required intermittent light oiling. Way less upkeep than a gas mower but it doesn't cut as evenly and leaves the clippings on the lawn (could be good or bad depending on your point of view)

As Jorn said, buy a new frig. If it's just the two of you you won't need a big one and if you aren't going to stay there you won't need the extended warranty. less than 400$

Used appliance, cheap new mower, quality cordless drill you take with you. Write off the rest.
May be a little far for you but i do business with a great second hand appliance place that even provides warranties on their stuff, im sure there is an equiv near you. The cheap bolens mower at lowes is great, super highly rated for a 140 dollar mower. So simple it wont break. Cordless power stuff there are a lot of decent things now. I have a 10 year old dewalt 18v cordless i love. Ryobi has some good stuff, go for the kit that has the saw, drill, and screw gun all on the same battery packs in the same case for convenience

In the fall lots of townships have tag sale day, I'd look for a few local days where you can raid sale after sale. Ours is in September.
