looking at vw sportwagen

I'm considering taking the leap to a new or newish vw diesel wagon with stick. Anybody know what they're rated to tow?

Drove a new one today with the six speed manual. Pretty nice. No feel in the steering though. Lots of torque from 2000 to 3000 rpm, tapers off as you near the 5000 rpm redline.

They're gonna look around for an 014 for me in a light color. The test drive was a black on black car.

So you were not super impressed? I'm also thinking about a new car and that is on the list to test drive.

It was a very nice car. I guess the main thing slowing me down is spending that much money on a car.

I am still looking. Looks like there are new ones out there online for $21,500 or so. Seems like a lot of car for the money. I could not find anywhere in the literature that it is rated to tow but folks here say it will tow 2000#. If I put it on a small open trailer I could tow my race car with it.

Seems like a lot of car for the money. I'd get a brown one with the stick!

Everything I read says 2000.

Look at the hitches for the car. The hitch companies have to cover their as5es.

Those cars seem to provoke fish stories so I wouldn't trust anything that sounded a little fishy.

The engine has bags of torque...250 or so foot lb. The engine is so quiet that its easy to rev it up to the rev limiter which just acts as if it is lifting your foot off the gas.....smoothly just levels off the rpm. The two top gears don't feel necessary as far as performance goes, so I suspect both might be overdrives.

I can see getting very comfy with driving it, like I am with my cummins. Just get into a rhythm shifting it like a big truck, though if not in a hurry I imagine it would be easy to skip gears on It as I do in my cummins.

Its a very pleasant drive though the steering is completely numb. My big dodge is much more satisfying to drive, steering wise.

I like feel in the steering.

You won't want for power with it.

they hold their value very well. A low miles used one is 19 to 20K asking price at a dealer, and a new one can be had on the internet for 21.5.

A local guy tows his vintage beetle on a featherlight trailer behind his JSW.

It can be done.

As for towing & hitches, can you just build something beefy to go on it?

Can't tell you about the towing capacity, but can tell you that I really like my TDI.
