Successful cooperatives

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7565584850785786404#

Some people might be interested in this 1970's BBC documentary about the Mondragon Cooperatives. It's about an hour long. The cooperatives have expanded substantially since the documentary was produced and have globalized with partner coops in the third world. I've had a copy of the doc for years but didn't know it had showed up on Google. Very interesting principles and practices.

Speaking of Mondragons (never mind the date of Kerry's original note!), I just finished a scifi novel in which mondragon cooperatives played the dominant economic/political role in interplanetary relations. Damn, I just forgot the tile & author! Damn!

I'll have to find the book and post an update. Sorry, Kerry.

(I keep forgetting my short term memory sucks.)

Yeah, I had never previously heard of Mondragons and your mentioning of them several times caused me learn about them. When I read that novel it reminded me of those long-ago posts. I did a search until I hit one that was clean of distractions.

Haven't been following recently but one of the cooperatives went bankrupt a couple of years ago. Not sure what it's status is but it was one of the original ones I think.

I am not surprised about Mondragon being a Spanish company. Labor regulations and overall poor work ethic make it darn near impossible to run a traditional business without taking out the whip.

My father, owner of a tiny bar, had to split it into 3 "partnerships" to make the social security tax somewhat bearable on the company, and motivate the two other bartnenders to put some effort, maximize sales and clean after themselves. Conscientious, hard-working people are hard to find for the hospitality business around these parts, and firing an employee here is awfully expensive... sometimes it's better to train a newbie and set the standards on the spot.

from what I understood about the modragoon cooperatives there you had to have a family member in already and able to get the position when they die,, its a closed system with no new inductees!
