The webs they weave ... literally ... spiders.

I have had a spider in my back yard for a week or so. It seems to be staying in the same tree during the day and it weaves it's web at night.

I am fascinated by the whole process. The branch it starts from is about 7 ft off the ground. I look for its web each night and the construction is nothing short of amazing. Some of them have been anchored to the ground 7ft below. Usually it anchors the web on a chair or table about 4 ft down. Given that this spider might have a arm span of 1/2" I think that is pretty impressive. The webs are usually anchored at 3 or 4 points and there are cross members and stability ties all over the place. Once it gets the superstructure built it sets the radial strands upon which the web will be built. Then around and around it goes. I saw him build the entire web in about an hour.

I know it is genetically wired to do this and that there is no "thought" involved but it is still an amazing display of nature.

They're impressive all right.

Although the official policy is "If it has more than 4 legs and it's within 50ft of the house, kill it" it's nice to admire the stuff living under my wood pile.

No idea. It is light brown and about 1/2"-3/4" incl legs.

I just find it amazing that it can construct something that is roughly 150 times larger than it's self and have it come out symmetrical and stable. I could not do that with tools and bunch of help.
