Chip/pin credit cards

Anyone here in the US have one? Spent the last month in Europe and its a PIA to have a magnetic strip signature card over there. Unusable in many important circumstances. I want a chip/pin card. (not a chip signature card since I think that would have similar problems). I've only been able to find a chip/pin card by Barclaycard in the USA. Anyone know of others?

I have A Citibank issued chip card. Am starting to see some places in the U.S. that use the chip reader too.

Chip by itself is somewhat helpful but it doesn't solve the basic problem for European use--some European locations will only allow chip and pin cards and reject chip and signature cards. Public transportation ticket machines are an example.

Yes, but they will be signature cards and not PIN cards so they will be equally unusable in Europe. I talked to them yesterday since I already have a Capital One card.

Had an AMEX chip card issued in the US for 2 years. Works in Europe without putting in a PIN.

American Express is frowned upon by many retailers in Europe because the handling charges are so high (seller looses out).

I suggest getting one of these if you can

Did you use it in a ticket machine? I tried my card at a gas station and they said they wouldn't accept any card without a pin.

Do you know if you have to be a UK resident or have a UK address to get one of those prepaid cards?

Just to be clear--my US magnetic strip card did work often in Europe as long as there was a human person who was both willing and able to enter the correct information to the card reader and have it print out a paper copy of the transaction for signature. It never worked on an automated machine with no person present. Many fuel stations are like that and many public transportation ticket machines have no person present. In the more rural areas, clerks appeared never to have run across magnetic strip credit cards.

I guess you'd need an address to receive the card - whether that's got to be in the UK or not you'd have to see - they probably wouldn't be too bothered if there was some sort of connection to an existing master card.

Another thing I've remembered is that paypal have a way of paying in the high street these days - I can't remember if that's a real card or not. It might be one of those smart phone apps that allow payment.

Bull sheet - that's just people being awkward - chips on credit cards / bank cards have been widely introduced in the last two years over here to try and slow down simple copying...

...before that people were swiping everywhere - and before that you had to put a card in a machine that then made an indentation of your card on carbon paper...

...and before that you had to use paper money...

...and before that you had to carry gold...

...and before that you had to bring something good to swap...

Just found this option: https://www.travelex.com/cash-passport

It's nice that you can load it with a variety of currencies but you have to pay them a 5.5% fee to buy those currencies to begin with. My existing magnetic strip card doesn't include a fee for foreign currency transactions.

Andrews Federal Credit Union has a chip/pin credit card with no annual fee. Looks like it may be the best deal in the US when it comes to the chip/pin card.

Seems chipped cards may have been introduced later in the USA in general. I forget how long mine have been chipped in Canada but it seems a pretty long time. Maybe ten years or more. We still have to use a pin number with them though.

I was kind of surprised as well that places like South Korea are way ahead of north America in many ways like wifi. For some reason we are just not keeping up.
