Lots of those guys have ghost producers who make the actual music, they just perform live. That said people will pay to go to dance, as has been shown through the ages

A lot of Dutch DJ's on this list. I still remember the first night I heard a DJ playing House back in 1987, what a night.

On another note, the "Naked Cowboy" in Times Square, NYC, through various promotions, ad deals and endorsements, has made a few million dollars.

House went the way of the do-do bird for a bit, but is making a very strong comeback!

There's quite a few DJs playing some really good/fresh house - check out the track "After Life" by Tchami and the track "Man with the Red Face" by Mark Knight.

And FWIW - Paul Oakenfold is still out there spinning... I've seen him a few times, and he never fails to disappoint.

He's not bad live either - when he plays, his music has pretty good energy and flow, which is more than what most of modern music offers.

There's a whole sub-culture to electronic, much in the same way there was a whole sub-culture to music in the 60s/70s. People travel from all over the place to some of the larger music festivals - EDC in Las Vegas draws people from all over the world; as does Tomorrowland in Belgium.

And I'll just leave this here:

Some of these guys put on a show and keep the crowd entertained. Once they get a name they can perform at the opening of a club and help a place set it's atmosphere for months to come.

So like any entertainer they can charge what the market will bear. If it is worth a half million to a club owner to advertise that the coolest person in the world is going to be at their club for the opening then it will drive business for months to come.

At least that's the way it is supposed to work.

The money is in selling booze, but you have to get people in the door first.

By the way, you can get a name Star to show up at your club and talk to customers if you have the cash. What's it worth to a club to claim it is so fantastic that big name stars hang out there?

I don't get it. These "DJs" don't actually create anything, do they?

To what extent are they creators in the way an actual musician is a creator? Aren't they just grabbing samples from actual musicians and putting them together into danceable tunes?

Have famous painters or movie directors done any different? They all sample.

All art is inspired, I don't know that there's anything totally new, but no difference? If Bob Dylan were 19 years old today, would he aspire to become a DJ rather than a lyricist/composer? How about McCartney, or Paul Simon. Lennon? Would we remember Da Vinci if he'd just cut up and pasted together portraits by other artists to make the Mona Lisa?
While Djs are much more today than just record spinners, I see their product as craft more than art. Amusing but not durable. Nobody will remember DJ Funknutz in 25 years.

These are all producer/DJs. Although as I mentioned a lot of them have ghost producers (same concept as ghost writers) make their music. Some of these guys have been around a long time and have sadly dumbed down their music quite a bit for the masses, but hey that's what earns money. Tiestos music 10-15 years ago was epic, really complex trance. Now it's the "running red lights" pop song...guess which netted him more money. I'd probably do the same. Steve aoki, David guetta, aviici, all make pretty simple music but get radio play so they sell shows...lots of rumors of ghost producers with them...

Lot of respect for deadmau5, he used to be a beta tester for music production software I used probably 10-15 years ago and his work was very very good. They would release his configure files on the software release so you could see everything. He still doesn't disappoint.

AVB has been around for ages too, with his state of trance radio show and mixes. Glad to see he is still up there. Maybe one of these days Digweed will make the cut.

Not only $66m he reportedly got into Taylor Swift's pants behind it also.

What kills me is the large roomful of sheep in that vid.

Maybe it was a glitch in the filming/soundtrack connection but it looked like his hand clapping wasn't in sync with the music.
