X2, I always make it a point to read directions just to find the street names that stick out and key exits at least. One thing about my BMW that was nice was that you could send it locations and directions straight from google maps on your phone and it'd enter it into the satnav/voice guidance. Very convenient for trips with a ton of turns (like backroad bombs). Damn thing wouldn't shut up though.
I don't think I've missed it...convenient but not necessary. If I go now I just follow another guy who is from the area and knows the roads like the back of his hand.
