Yes, I just reached that hypothesis. I'm thinking that what is happening is that people are becoming dependent upon the GPS warning them to get into the right lane for an exit. When the GPS is muted or not turned on, they aren't paying attention enough to get in the right lane in time for the exit, so they make a desperate move at the last second. A bad side effect of on-board navigation separate from the human brain.

It's sooo easy to see where you're going before you even leave the house. Not only can you google the directions, but with street view you can see what the building looks like, whether it's on a one way street, and how close the nearest parking (garage) is. It's simple really. How do I get there? What does it look like? One picture is worth thousand directions.;)

I have OnStar...Never use the direction feature.

You're on to something. Apps and driving attention spans are inversely proportional.

X2, I always make it a point to read directions just to find the street names that stick out and key exits at least. One thing about my BMW that was nice was that you could send it locations and directions straight from google maps on your phone and it'd enter it into the satnav/voice guidance. Very convenient for trips with a ton of turns (like backroad bombs). Damn thing wouldn't shut up though.

I don't think I've missed it...convenient but not necessary. If I go now I just follow another guy who is from the area and knows the roads like the back of his hand.
