Electric power contract. Which is better

I live in N Texas and are deregulated. The web site I used is Power To Choose | Home. Currently the company I am using is discount power.

They have offered a renewal of 7.13 a kWh
https://signup.discountpowertx.com/PDFDocs/SI12Q31151-159033.pdf

On the power to choose site there is a offer of 10.13 a kWh
https://signup.discountpowertx.com/PDFDocs/PR12U02151-156450.pdf

how ever on this plan there give you a credit of $65 if usage is over 1,000 kWh a month. My lowest usage over the last year has been 1270 kWh with a high at a little over 2800 kWh. The avg over the last 13 months is 2092 kWh.

The way I am figuring this is that at about 2400 kWh is where the 7.13 plan works out better but I am avg lower than that so I think going with the higher rate with $65 credit is a better deal.

Am I missing anything?

You're thinking in the right direction. I calculated the break over point at 2167 kWh. (Within about 5 kWh)

On months you're running less than 2167, the higher plan is better. On months where you're running higher, the lower per kWh is better. It looks like that figure is close to your average usage so you will have to look at month by month to see if you have more months over or under the break over point.

I agree with your assessment. That said, I am not a fan of more complex pricing schemes so always choose the lowest priced plan without them. You do seem to use a lot of kilowatt-hours. I have a good size house with pool and am below 1K most of the year and rarely reach 2K even in July/August.

Would not use some outfit like this in Houston.
ide pick one here in Dallas.
if you are not willing to take them to small claims court if its necessary, then where they are headquartered is of no relivance.

I'm not sure why I am using so much either. The house is older (built in 1968) but I recently had 22" of insulation blown in the attic for R60. The house is only 1400 Sq Ft. Had a new AC system installed last Nov. Its a 3 ton 16 SEER. We also have a 300 sq ft all glass sunroom (had solar shades put on the west facing glass last month) for the animals that is heated and cooled with one of those hotel looking wall units (wide and squat) as well as the pool.

The wife is pretty warm blooded so the temps are kept at 74 during the day and 72 at night. I do not know if given all this that the kWh is still high or not. To many variables to take into account to make a apples to apples comparison. Everytime I hear stories like yours it does piss me off when I look at my bill.

No idea how companies get listed on that site but Discount Power is one of the companies that comes up just not with the lower rates being offered on Power to choose.

Been buying electricity from various vendors for years, never been bitten. Never been charged anything other than what I agreed to.

I actually had a supplier go bankrupt a few years ago. Nothing bad happened. No interruption in service. They just rolled me into another supplier on a month-by-month basis. Enrolled in a new plan when I got around to it. No egregious charges in the meantime. I'm not seeing any risk.

I've lived in TX since '97 and I think I have bought electric from a different company every year. This is the first time I have renewed with the same company.

I had one go under like you did and I got rolled over to someone and changed when I got around to it. No big deal.

Never had an issue in 18 years of buying the cheapest electric available.
