Must be an inside joke?

Chola was a commonly used slang term for Hispanic gang divas back in the 90's. The style of makeup & tattoos was distinctive - and, to some extent, owes some of its look and feel to Divine (do an image search for that one.... include John Waters and/or Pink Flamingos to sharpen the results ).
So - to me, there is what I suppose could be considered an "inside joke" flavor to it. Grew up in Southern California, knew some ladies and saw lots who employed this style. 10 years ago, brought she who would become Darling Wife into my life - and she was born and raised in Divine's (and John Waters') Baltimore.

I got a kick out of it and I wasn't familiar with the style. But I can really see it being a thing.
