What is the service life...

...of a steering box for a 2005 Tahoe?

I had it replaced back in May, to the tune of $600. I figured that since the vehicle has only cost us for tires and oil changes, the price was acceptable. Fast forward to last week when my wife said that it was leaking power steering fluid. To me, it looked like a hose, so I had my mechanic friend schedule me in for this afternoon. He replaces the suspected hose, fills up the power steering fluid, starts the truck, turns the wheel, and it's shooting fluid everywhere. He wiped it down again and saw that it was leaking from the steering box area...meaning the steering box needed replaced again.

His wife just dropped my wife off at the house so he can spend the night with the truck, listening to soft rock by the wood burning stove in his garage...replacing the bad part.

I'll be going to the dealer, which replaced it last time, and raising some hell until they decide to give me enough cash to shut up.

Just turned 90K. We've only put 2200 miles on it since May. We've been driving the F-250s the most this year, because I was concerned about the mileage racking up on the Tahoe. Maybe it was pissed about that, and got jealous?

I've taken that kind of razzing since buying it from family. I come from a strong Ford family. However, I bought it for SWMBO...'nuff said.

The replacement pumps can be crap. I had a similar situation where i did two power steering pumps in quick succession on my chevy van. Actual steering gearbox seems odd though.

Sounds like a cheap reman which would be odd installed by the dealer. Is it an oem part?

The fullsize GM stuff is highly reliable for the most part. Gas and oil changes also for my beat to hell v6 express van pushing 300k. Same for my current diesel van.

Yes, OEM part. What's going in is aftermarket...

I was wrong...it wasn't an OEM part. It was an Autozone reman part. Marked REMAN, and had the sticker on it still showing the same markings as the one we picked up from Autozone. Also, and I think this a bit odd...it's a smaller part than the one my mechanic just put on it. It appears they had the wrong par to begin with.

Wife test drove it, and came back with the same response I did...the steering is tighter now, and more responsive. It feels great.

They got the nickname AZOO for a reason. They may have had someone return a part for credit and put a different/wrong part in carton marked with the part you needed and it just got restocked. I purchased an upper motor mount (torque rod) for a Camry from AZOO two weeks before having done the replacement when I opened the box it was some else used part put back into the box. I will never buy anything ever again from AZOO without checking and comparing to the part I brought in. I may start to check fluids to see if they have been opened before also.

were you informed the steering box was a autozone reman by the dealer? That seems strange that they would do that.

what were you charged for?

No, they didn't inform me that it was an aftermarket part. I was charged for an OEM part, not a reman part. The reman part is $250, OEM was closer to $400. I was charged $600 for the service, and waited 90 minutes while it was done at the dealer. My receipt states that they only use OEM parts.

I'm sure I have the ability to go further than *****ing them out, but I don't have the time nor the money to go that far. If they are pricks about it, I plan on bringing it all out in reviews on the internet.

I can't become too much of an Ahole...the dealership is 4 doors from my house. I see and talk to the mechanics from my back door in the mornings. Part of that don't crap in your backyard thing.

If they do not replace it with OEM being it is walking distance stroll through the showroom each morning looking at vehicles and grab a free coffee until you feel you are at an even point.
