Going to Palm Springs

for a long weekend to visit the Mrs. hi school chum. Any great car museums nearby? Can people visit Leno's garage? Is it near there? Is the Queen Mary still in Long Beach?

nope, if you want to see a world away from where u are now, rent a jeep, and head up Indian ave, to hwy 62......
in 15 minutes you can be in the bottom of the Mojave desert, YV is the main town up ere, and you can see Joshua Tree national park (you could even drive thru it in a loop back down to the lower desert).
you can go to Landers and perhaps hook up with the aliens~ ( no not the ones from Mexico).
you could head back into ruby canyon lookin for willie boy,
you could head up 2n02 to see some truly off the beaten trail So Cal--that's about as un so cal as there is, you could head up to eureka peak and see both the upper desert and the lower at the same time. you could do a 2 mile round hike and see the 49 palms oasis.
if you aint going to do any out door desert thing, at least head SW to palm Desert and head up the Palms to Pines hwy, that takes you up the mountain that backs up to palm springs, and you will end up in Idlewild, which is got a forest that was at one time the closest thing to a heaven like garden on this earth, til a booger eating chicken *****er named George W let some oregon loggers come down there and start "lollypoping" the most fantastic trees that were once there.. its still a very nice forrest, but the finest ones were cherrypicked in the name of "preventing fires" the idiots plan...

Nice aircraft museum by the airport. They have a B-17 and other vintage WWII warbirds. Some modern fighter aircraft.

The aerial tram to the top of mountain is scenic.

Last time I was there was for the McCormick car auctions, I made a side trip to watch the historic car races at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway.

Sounds marvelous! I don't know how much hiking I will be able to do in the desert! The driving loops sound promising!

LOL, they close at 5PM Pacific Time.

As I recall, the restaurant inside is a bit over priced for the quality presented, so plan your meals accordingly.

Tom-
The PS Aerial Tramway seems rather expensive to me, but each time I do it, I am truly impressed. If you can forget about how much money you spent, it is really a great thing to check out.

Yes, the Queen Mary is still in LB. No Spruce Goose there any more, though. The QM is a little tired these days. It is still an impressive ship, but needs a coat of paint. If you need a place to sleep in LB, it is actually cheaper than many of the hotels, and obviously has a lot of history associated with it. The rooms are adequate. Nothing too fancy, but nice enough. The aquarium in LB is surprisingly nice if you like that sort of thing.

If you are thinking of a drive of that magnitude from PS, I would encourage you to check out the Petersen Automotive Museum in LA. If anyone traveling with you prefers art or history, there are other types of museums nearby. But for folks like us, the Petersen is incredible.

The space shuttle is at a free museum in downtown LA called California Science Center. It is pretty cool to walk underneath it.

My son (4 y.o.), who loves fossils and dinos, would recommend the LA Natural History Museum or the La Brea Tarpits. We have to go to those every time we pass through LA. Perhaps not your cup of tea, but I owe it to him to mention his favorite places.

If the air museum in PS isn't open for you, there is a nice air museum at March Air Field in Riverside. So that is still about an hour from PS, but far less than the 2+ hours between PS and LA.

I grew up in Redlands, which is about 45 minutes from PS.. I am actually there right now visiting my mom. If you have any questions about PS or soCal, I will do my best to help. Hope you have a fun trip.

Yesterday was up at six. Peterson is closed for renovations drat. Visited the tar pits. Cool. Then went to riverside and visited the small but very interesting international automotive museum. It has a lot of Dan gurney memorabilia and at least seven of his open wheelers, plus a bunch of mascara ties also one f one Ferrari. Made it back to la Quinta by sixish A long day with too much driving.

Had a great meal that couldn't be beat, a couple bourbons and off to bet. Today we're going to explore box canyons etc.

If you are headed down to Long Beach for the Queen Mary, also see the USS Iowa in San Pedro.

At first, I missed the bit about a "zoo" and thought you were talking about a construction equipment museum .
